The video recording act.

The video recording act was founded in 1978 by the BBFC the idea was brought up as
Idea due to there being no legalisation as to what was recorded and filmed.
Before the video recording act was established there was no warming as to what the
content contained, so the idea was brought to the table to start putting ratings on tv
shows and films, this would warn the viewer as to what the content contained to prevent
children/minors from watching violence or pornography.

Copyright
Copy right is very important in the TV and film industry as there are very strict guidelines
as to what and what cant be used. If a tv show is broadcasted with unauthorised
copyrighted material then the show will be taken down which will cause a serve loss in
the companies profiting.
The purpose of copy right is it gives the creator of their product credit for their work and
to make sure that they are getting profit/credit for their product.
This protects the content creator from being ripped off, without copyright the content
creators work could be stolen and sold/credited by someone else.
If copyright infringement laws are broken, then the content will either be removed from
its platform or the content will be taken down.
An example of copy right laws being broken
ITunes broke copyright laws in 2011 by broadcasting a film makers work without consent
from the copyright holder and the copyright holder said to Apple that they did not want
their films on the iTunes store as they only want it to be found on their personal website,
apple acted on this a took down the films.

The film act

The film act is relevant to the industry as the film industry is partly funded through other
counties paying tax to film in our country.
It helps the industry as it is putting funding towards making more films.

Importance of ethical issues

It is important that there are age restrictions on films as strong language is not suitable
for minors. But it is also important that some language is not used at all such as resist
slang. It is important in tv and film they show that they represent a diverse range of
culture to prove an unbiased opinion. If the show/film displays one race or one type of
person it could make the show/film appear ignorant.
When producing a film it is important to filter the language used for your target audience,
if your target audience is 18+ then it is obvious that strong language is going to be used,
if the film Is a U or a PG then the language must be filtered a lot more as the film is
aimed at minors.

Representation of gender
Men and women should both be represented equally so it represents their
branding as unbiased, equality is a very sensitive topic and favouring one sex
may cause issues for the company.
Both sexes are represented as strong in an equal way and weak in an equal way
it is giving both sexes the option to be equally anything.

For example, in kick ass represents both male and female characters as being
strong and powerful, this film also represents these things in a diverse range of
ages the powerful female in the story is a young girl and the powerful male is a
teenage boy. This way it is representing power in both genders and gives hope to
all ages.

Representation of religion beliefs.

Religious beliefs are never really promoted in films as it avoids controversy, its not
represented as against any religion or with a religion the topic is usually avoided to
prevent upsetting anyone.
Men and women should be represented equally. Gender roles should be avoided to avoid
discrimination.
TV and film use Ofcom and ASA to make sure that all of these rules are followed to 99%
of the time TV shows that a broadcasted are non-discriminating.

British board of film classification

The British board of film classification monitor film ratings, the organisation was created
in 1912 to censor the content that creators were producing.
The BBFC Is important in my chosen sector as it is important to censor the content on
television as youngest children have access to tvs so by giving pre-caution to viewers
before they watch a show it makes them aware of what the show contains.

Film Distributors Association

The film distributors association is an organisation that monitors the corporations that
distribute film.

British academy of film and television arts (BAFTA)

Bafta is an organisation/charity that reward content creators for their work through an
award show, nominees will be chosen and a winner will be selected by the general public.
BAFTA is funded by sponsorships, corporate partnerships and individual donations.

Television, Radio and Telecommunications Office for Communication (Ofcom)

Ofcom are a corporation that regulate the content that is broadcasted onto television.
They are the main board that make decisions as to what is suitable for the general public.
This is relevant to my chosen sector as Ofcom regulate what is put on tv, as I want to
work in the tv industry it is important that I know to follow Ofcoms rules and regulations.

Advertising Standards Authority (ASA)

ASA make sure that all content on TV are up to a certain standard. Asa make sure that
content broadcasted is not offensive, discriminative in any way. This is important to my

chosen sector as I must make sure any content I create follows ASAs rules or the body
will not allow it to be broadcasted.

Censorship
Censorship is is a form of tv monitoring used to monitor speech, information when its
logged as inappropriate or harmful to viewers. Speech is also monitored to filter political
views, this is so no views are being discriminated against and the show isnt being biased
to any political views or leaders.
Censorship is important in the TV industry as it is important for the viewers to not be
effected.
It is important for music included in tv shows to be censored as minors that could be
listening in the day may be effected by the language and parents of the minors would not
be happy.
A popular tv show called Family Guy is played on BBC Three at 10:30pm because it
contains explicit language and by putting it on late night TV it is less likely for a minor to
be exposed to its explicit content.

In 1953 Marlon Brandos The wild ones was sent to the board. It is a story about a motor
bike gang that terrorised a small village in America, this was banned as the board where
worried that the idea behind this may lead to the UK according to the bbc The board had
no option but to come to the conclusion that: "We are unable to issue a certificate for this
spectacle of unbridled hooliganism." The film was banned. (BBC, 2011b)
The film makers asked the board to re-consider, but the board said that it will remain
banned for 14 years.
