HOLDEN’S ROLE MODEL BY: KATHERINE Aatherine Edmunds HELA 10 David Holden's Role Model Although Holden pushes away many people in his life due to his perception of phoniness, ent and who he can there are some attributes that he values. Holden values people who are int have intelligent conversations with, just like his old friend and mentor Carl Luce. Holden comments, “I said. ‘Listen, hey, Luce. You're one of those intellectual guys. Holden meets multiple people throughout the novel who he does Iden also mentions that he does not favor people who are very not favor due to their arrogance. Having a role model that is humble will help Holden be grateful for what he has. Alsg going through hard times can really change a person, and Holden can relate to that. Holden being able to relate to someone can make him more open and talk about his true emotions. Holden’s favorite person is his little sister Phoebe. The reason for this is because of her innocence and joy which is what Holden strives for. Holden hates growing up because he affiliates it with failure, so having some innocence brings Holden to a better time. This also helps Holden bring out his emotional side. Holden likes people who can dance. Dancing shows a more genuine and creative side to a person and Holden appreciates this. Holden has a hard time truly expressing himself at times, dancing is one way that can help him be sincere. Holden shows us this when he dances with a girl at the bar, “The blonde was some dancer, she was one of the best dancers I ever danced with. I'm not kidding, some of these very stupid girls can really knock you ut on the dance floor” (Salinger 70), ths Mand Waldo would be a great role model because of the resonanée he will instill in Holden, Although Waldo is young, Holden tends to draw towards innocence, Waldo’s humble and open personality will help Holden open up to someone that he can truly care about. Holden being able to be open help him be his true inner selfyand not be a phony. I do not think Waldo would be the best role model for me because younger kids don’t resonate as role models. ity. Children are very important to me, but I believe in fami have had a lot more experience than me, Waldo’s attributes of humbleness and openness do affect me and are things I try and strive to be like.
