Multicultural Views of Students

Multicultural Lesson Plan

Objective:
Students will be able to define what it means to them to be different. They will be
able to depict what do us, as human beings, have in common from a scientific and
environmental perspective.

Grade Level:
7th

Subject:
Science

Lesson:
1. Have students engage in a group discussion of they think it means to be
different.
-What is different? How do you define what is different and what is
normal? What
influences play a role in helping you determine
this?
2. Provide students with dry erase boards and a dry erase marker. Have all
students spread out so that no one influences anyone elses answer.
- Ask students to write down one thing that makes everyone different.
(Keep in mind
that there are no wrong answers, this is more of a
perspective question.
3. Have students reveal their answer on a count of three.
- Ask each student why they answered what they did.
4. Create a groups discussion about what do we as humans, share in common,
rather than differences.
-Discuss biological similarities, environmental factors that reap as
benefits, and economical benefits.
5. Provide students with a miniature cut-out human body, magazines, scissors,
glue and markers.
6. Students will put together a collage of images from the magazines to
describe themselves.
7. Provide students with bubble letters for each letter of their name. Students
will create a collage of words, instead of images, to describe themselves.
8. This may take up to a class period or two. At the end of class, have each
student present their collages and describe what they put on each project.
9. Collages will be displayed on some type of wall either outside or inside the
classroom for presentation of others.

Goal:
This activity will help increase critical thinking and observation skills. Students will
hopefully have different perspectives on different cultures and ways of living.
