A design school
for the modern
world
cole intuit.lab is a design and visual communication
French school cofounded in 2001 by Patrick Felices along
with Clement Derock and Frederic Lalande.
Patricks experience in design and teaching coupled with
Clements and Frederics experience in running Seenk,
one of the most creative design agencies in Paris, makes
cole intuit.lab a merger of imagination, discipline and
application.
The aim of the school has been to produce high quality
professionals whose profiles meet the specific needs of
the graphic design and visual communication sectors
in India, France and across the world. With the newly
begun school in India, the syllabus has been especially
skewed to meet the professional demands of the visual
communications industry in India and to tap the potential
that design holds in the country.
cole intuit.lab through its students have built solid
relationships with over 800 companies in France and
other countries. cole intuit.labs excellent success rate
in finding work placements for its students makes it a
real standard setter in vocational training for the visual
communications sector.

BLENDING
EDUCATION
AND
EXPERIENCE
India has historically been synonymous with art. Yet the evidence of the aesthetic touch in
Indian surroundings is waning with every passing day. Living with beauty is a habit which must
be inculcated from an early age. Only when the matter of good taste is taken seriously, can
economic and social development in India, happen beautifully.
Yet when it comes to changing for the better, no other time has been better than the present
moment.
The setting up of top French design school, cole intuit.lab in Mumbai is a step in the direction
of the marked improvement that is required in the field of education related to graphic design,
art and advertising.
While the collaboration of France and India makes for a cultural powerhouse, its important that
India looks towards France as a country worth emulating when it comes to taking pride in their
own heritage, art and culture - a mindset that reflects in French contemporary design.
cole intuit.lab has achieved success by incorporating professional exposure in the academic
curriculum- a much needed position that has been so far vacant, in the design and art education
milieu in India.
Heres looking forward to a new wave in design education.
Ravi Deshpande
Academic
and professional
approaches
to education,
finally join hands.
"A sound educational background usually has little to do with
the everyday challenges we face in the course of practising our
vocations. The theory of books is seldom applied when it comes
to solving problems, design related or otherwise, in the real
world. cole intuit.lab is a design school that strives to bridge
the gap between theoretical, academic learning and practical,
professional applications."
Clment Derock and Frderic Lalande:
In the year 2000, after rather long stints in Parisian design companies, Clment Derock
and Frdric Lalande got together to create a design company that was the first of its kind
in France. It combined separate skill sets new Internet-related technology, mixed media
branding and traditional design skills to create a truly new agency, Seenk.
Based on the belief that mtissage or crossbreeding is crucial to the evolution of species,
Seenk adopted mixed media as a part of each of their branding or communication exercise
at a time when no other company was doing so. The consequence of this constant attempt
at merger of media was that a new breed of designers came into their own and flourished.
This was a breed of designers that did not exist before due to the gap that existed in design
education - a gap between academia and the professional world.
Thats why Clment and Frderic tied up with Patrick Felices, experimented in the field of
design education. Patrick had been the Dean of a noted Paris based design school for many
years before he took on the mantle of co-founder and Dean at cole intuit.lab.
With a consistently expanding list of firsts (the first school to introduce new subjects in design
in the 1980s, the first to truly promote international collaborations, the first to regularly
engage in mixed media design), cole intuit.lab has led the way in design education.
Today cole intuit.lab is one of the top best design schools in Paris. And for the first time
has brought itself to the doorstep of students outside of Europe, best place to be in Asia,
to Mumbai, India.

Design
in the Indian
context
In India, as in the rest of the world, design is the profession of the future. Skilled designers
are a rare breed and the demand for them, is always unmet. Sensitivity to aesthetics and design
play a huge role in contemporary India. It is the key missing link between where India is today
and where India should ideally be.
Just as the country is experiencing a resurgence of power both economic and intellectual
design is also on the verge of rediscovery. As the potential of design in the Indian market gets
gradually unlocked, it will be evident that theres no end to what could be achieved.
Despite being reputed for producing the most mathematical, scientific and technological minds,
India has not quite been the front-runner when it comes to great minds in the field of design
and communication. Yet the country is brimming with material for creative inspiration.
The time is right for a career in design.
intuit.lab outlook
Learning is a multi-dimensional, multi-faceted activity. In the field of design, absorption
of information must be simultaneously accompanied by constant questioning of norms, staying
abreast of noteworthy work being done by the most creative minds from around the world
and staying sensitive to oneself and to ones surroundings in order to draw from personal
experiences.
The intuit.lab university strives to bring in an environment that lends itself to concentrated
understanding of design through a) absolute demystification of basic concepts and b) agility
and adaptability in moving with the times.
The intuit.lab university seeks to achieve the perfect synergy between free creative thinking
and relevant business applications.

Strengths
In order to foster the development of original creative personalities, we offer students constant
support and guidance with their work and in the choices they make, through mentoring, themed
seminars, team work, real case studies and stages.
One of the schools aims is to get students involved and encourage them to take responsibility.
From their very first year of study, they are in contact with working industry professionals
and businesses and are exposed to real agency projects.
Throughout the course, the work rate and results demanded are designed to meet the
expectationd of the real, professional world. The result? A select bunch of image designers
capable of meeting the demands of the profession.
Careers
intuit.lab schools provide international vocational visual communications and design training
in the fields of graphic design, packaging, publishing, advertising and multimedia and animation.

The vocation
of intuit.lab
Intuit.lab strives to be a living laboratory of reflection and the production of creative
solutions.
It engages in quality training that anticipates the development and mutations of the visual
communications industry. It intelligently influences the personal and cultural blossoming
of its future professionals. Students at intuit.lab learn to work alone and in teams under
the guidance of a team of passionate, multi-disciplinary teachers.
They develop their knowledge and independent ways of working or autonomy under some
of the most accomplished professionals in the areas of design and communication. Two driving
principles frame their training: a spirit of research and the knowledge of operational rigour
in production.
intuit.lab spirit
Intuit.lab is a state of mind. Far from the effects of fashion and seduction, we strive to develop
strong, adaptable creative personalities within the context of the school. We offer an environment
that reveals talent rather than simply providing a catalyst for know-how.
The cole intuit.lab prepares its students to seize the world around them with scope
and audacity. By laying emphasis on the science behind the art of design. By practising the
journey from intuition to usage in the real world. By offering lucid instructions in the
fundamental principles of visual creation, while proposing a methodology that is pertinent
and encourages reflection, analysis and synthesis. By offering seminars around design as
a profession, the importance of research and trend mining, market visits, interaction with
industry professionals.

Introduction to applied arts techniques.
This is a year of clear foundation, when students

Discovery

This first year of discovery
and apprenticeship
of fundamental ideas
is essential before entering
the advanced cycle.
As a year of orientation and knowledge in itself,
the preparation year structures the student and lays
a base on which their future skills can be built.
It is ultimately a year of initiation that awakens
curiosity.
Drawing takes up a predominant position. It is
primordial for the future of the creative individual
to acquire different approaches and techniques
to drawing and is the foundation of any training in
the visual domains later on. To know how to draw
is also to learn how to see, the better to understand.
This simple and personal translation of the world
is a language that structures creativity. The student
learns to use different techniques (crayon, painting,
volume, collage...) to master drawing through
observation in all its forms.

A high level of motivation is required during
the preparatory year. With 26 hours of classes
a week and the same amount of hours to be spent
on work in the students own time, it is an intensive
and tightly scheduled year of study. Whilst attending
classes, the student compiles research workbooks,
develops a personal creative project under
the supervision of a member of teaching staff
and prepares an individual portfolio of the best
work produced throughout the year.

Techniques
and creativity
Of all the classes, it is drawing that has an essential
role to play. It is crucial for any future creative
professional to gain a firm grasp of the different
approaches and techniques of drawing, which serves
as a foundation for all other courses of training
in the visual arts.
Drawing is about learning how to see better. Learning
how to see better leads to better understanding.
This personal and visual way of transposing the world
is a language which gives structure to creativity.
The student learns to use different techniques (pencil,
paint, volume, collage, etc.) to gain a firm grasp
of observational drawing in all its forms.
Beyond technique, all the other subjects taught
are intended to help the student develop a creative
mindset and cultivate a sensitivity to artistic issues.
By the end of the year, the student should be
in a position to provide relevant analysis and
arguments in favour of his work when presenting
it to examination juries.
Drawing is about
learning how
to see better.

The
professions
of the future
Above all, this is true because there will always
be products or services which will need graphic
designers to assert their presence: 250 new perfumes
every year, hundreds of new items of packaging
in supermarkets, several million titles on our press
stands, more than 60,000 brands created in France
every year and, taking into account the trademarks
registered in the EU and abroad, this figure rises
to 140,000 brands in total. Even cities, regions
and countries, finding themselves in competition
with each other, now have to manage their image.
But it is also true, because new technologies are
constantly generating new media and new needs.
The Internet has already done this.
And things arent going to stop there. Cars, household
goods and a multitude of other devices will soon be
equipped with screens and will start to communicate:
Until now, the graphic designer has worked just
on the surface of products. Now, his job is evolving
towards enabling them to dialogue with users via
this screen which he must render comprehensible.
The future also holds the promise of much-vaunted
intelligent spaces: These are rooms, stores
or meeting rooms where the occupants can modify
the atmosphere and decor of their space in real time.
We are set to live in an increasingly visual world,
where we will be inundated with images, signs,
drawings, etc. The role of the graphic designer
is to help us find our bearings in this visual
maelstrom, to continue to awaken our desires,
to inform us, to help us get around, make choices
and make our purchases. The graphic designer is there
to set the scene for and sequence the images of our
everyday life.

My four months in Montreal was one of
the most enriching experiences Ive had, from
a human, professional and cultural perspective.
Doing a work placement there and living
in a flatshare meant that I was living like any
other qubcois: I got up at 8am, commuted by
public transport during the rush hour and spent
time with the local qubcois people both on
my work placement and outside work. Basically,
it was just like I was working there permanently.
In addition to that, I was able to travel a bit too
when I took my days off. As a result, I now love
Quebec. One thing is for sure, Im pretty certain
that I want to go back...

The Master is when the intuit.lab course
really comes into its own: its all about taking
an intuitive approach, and learning from your
successes as well as your failures, just like in
real life. The thing that really made
an impression on me was learning about
the roles of different people in a team and
in an agency, and how to manage tensions
and differences of opinion between team
members. You learn a lot about yourself.
The teachers and visitors, some of whom are
from other countries, really open up your
horizons and give you an international,
multicultural perspective. They also give you
advice and teach you how to network.
