This map portrays the territory held by the Confederates throughout the

war. It shows how they were losing territory from crucial battles. The area in which
it has the year 1862 shows a lot of ports and other areas around water being taken
this is from the Battle of Shiloh, the loss of New Orleans, Antietam and MonitorMerrimac. Then the next section where there is loss come in 1863 in which the
western portion of the Confederates. The Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg
were the two battles in which the Confederates lost territory. Vicksburg is the
battle that separated the 2 halves of the Confederates. The battle of Gettysburg
ended the Confederates march north ending their offensive. During the year 1864
the south was once again cut in half. Sherman march to the sea went from Atlanta
to the Atlantic Ocean cutting a 60 mile wide gap in the South. Then lastly the year
1865 is when the Confederates surrendered to the Union at Appomattox Court
House.
