Dear Judges,
My name is Roxana Barros and as a student here at Harding University High School, the
graduation project has provided me with an opportunity to explore the topic of recycling in
depth. I chose to research the advantages of recycling because everyday we throw away reusable
items without knowing the harm it causes. If you step on Hardings campus, all you will see are
trash cans.. No recycling bins. If you step into a classroom, you might see a recycling container,
but most of the time you'll find it to be nearly empty.
Ive seen a trash can and a recycling bin side by side, but the pedestrian chooses to throw their
empty water bottle in the trash can. I didn't mind because I, also, had questions on whether on
not recycling even had a positive impact on our environment. Due to the efforts put into this
research, I was able to improve my lifestyle by recycling materials, not littering, and taking care
of our environment. Working on this project has deepened my understanding on the pros of
recycling. I have gained enough knowledge on this topic to impact my future.
Even though some people believe recycling is too expensive, mandatory recycling programs will
keep trash out of landfills, and could be profitable for cities and residents alike because it reduces
pollution, conserves material and protects wildlife. Over the years I learned that not recycling has
a tremendous impact on our environment in many different ways. For example, when we throw
everything away, it all goes to landfills. These landfills are overflowing, but they are also
releasing gases such as methane into our air, which adds on to the greenhouse effect as well as
affect our health. Another conflict caused is the thousands of deaths of animals, on land and in
water, too.
Thank you very much for taking time out to meet with me and discuss my topic. I hope you
enjoyed and gained knowledge from this presentation, as well as change your views on
recycling, so you can also change your lifestyle. Thanks once again for your time and interest.
