Dear Professor Arietta,

On February 11, 2016 I visited the Law offices of Rios and Parada. It was a Thursday
afternoon and I asked my mother if I could observe her working to see their daily task. Their
main task is working on cases such as car accidents, immigration, wrongful deaths, divorces, and
child protective services cases. There are five employees with different titles such as the two
lawyers, the office manager, the legal assistant, and the runner. Each performs different duties,
these two lawyers are the ones who appear in court and who work on the legal aspects of a
contract and a lawsuit. The office manager is responsible for hiring and firing people and makes
sure everyone is doing their job in the office. The legal assistant helps the lawyers perform legal
work and meets with customers to see how their cases are going. Last but not least is the runner,
which is the person that sets up the appointments for the customers and takes documents to other
laws offices and or courts. There are certain criterias to becoming a lawyer, the first step is
earning a bachelors degree to get into law school, the second step requires you to take the law
school admission test, the third step is to earn your juris doctor degree, and the last step is to pass
your state bar examination. To work in the Law Offices of Rios and Parada a degree is required
and to have a higher position you must have more experience in the field of work that is
presented. Communication is very vital to working in these offices because without
communication, no one would be able to get their jobs done. They communicate in different
ways, one of their communication strategy is thru the computers where they send E-Mails and
paperwork, another type of commination is thru the telephone where they make and take calls
from all different kinds of persons looking for their services, their main communication however
would be how they communicate with their clients on a personal level. Rios and Parada do a lot
to help their clients win their cases, live better lives, and help them win lawsuits. Overall I
learned a lot about lawyers and it gave me a whole new perspective on who they are and one day
I would like to help innocent people the way they help innocent people.

Thank you,
Alexis Guzman
