Unit Paper 5
The big idea in this last unit was on Structures and Systems in artmaking. Throughout the
lessons, we were able to investigate and learn about the usage of structure when it comes to art.
For example, our most recent studio revolved around the feeling that we were the curators. By
splitting us up into groups, we were able to co-curate and collaborate with one another to
create a piece of artwork from the printed images from the Smithsonian Museum. This final
activity brought feelings of the past units along with it as well. I felt that there was a sense of
play due to the fact that we had the freedom of expression in choosing and creating our desired
artwork through the music, visual effects, and even just the basic structure of the piece. The
symphony of the artwork reflects the 21st century approach that the way that the artwork is
presented is extremely crucial. The representation of the artwork is a huge part of what the piece
says to others.
I would be able to synthesize the big idea of structure into my own use with a young
population in a similar way that we did in studio time. Just like the video we watched on the
teacher who allowed their students to create the sound suits through their own freedom and ideas.
I would integrate something that is a cross between the two. Maybe allow the students to create

the structure instead of a sound suit. This way, they would be able to see the importance of
structures and systems in art making.
