TornadoRipsThroughCollegePark
EarlierthismorningagradeF4tornadowentthroughthedowntownareaof
CollegeParkcausingseveredamagetobuildings,windows,andpowerlines.Citizens
wereadvisedtoevacuatedowntownCollegeParktoreachsafety.Thereareonlythree
knownfatalitiesbecausethepoweroutagepreventedcallersfrombeingabletoreachthe
emergencyhotline.
Officialsareintheprocesstofixingthepowerlines,butmanyquestionsremain
unansweredduetothelackofpowerandthemalfunctioningoftheemergencyhotline
number.
Wearenotsurethecostofthedamageatthispoint,butournumberoneconcern
isthesafetyofourcitizens,saidMayorMylesGrossmanduringapressconference.He
addedthatschoolbuseshaveevacuatedstudentstosafetyshelters.
Sincemanyroadblocksresultedincarsnotbeingabletopass,themayor
recommendedtheMetroasawaytoreachsafety.
Inasecondpressconferencetogiveanupdateonthesituation,themayorand
headcommunicationsdirectorinformedthetownthatthetornadowasinitiallygiventhe
gradeF3,butafterRegentsParkingGaragefell,itwasreassessedandtheadditional
damagecausedthegradetoincreasetoanF4.Themayorsaidhedoesntexpectanyone
tohavebeeninjuredorkilledbythecollapseoftheparkinggarage,butallcarsparked
insidearelikelytotaled.
Helicopterscirculatedtheareasearchingforpeopleinneedofrescue,buthave
notdiscoveredanyone.Itappearstheevacuationwarninggavecitizensenoughtimeto
evacuatethearea.
Moreinformationwillbeprovidedasitisreleased,butinthemeantimethe
CollegeParkPoliceDepartmentandFireDepartmentareworkingdiligentlytoimprove
thesituation.
