DEVAL S ATTRITION VALUE TEST FOR COURSE AGGREGATES

Expt:
AIM:
To determine the attrition value of given aggregate sample by conducting Deval s a
ttrition test.
APPARATUS:
Devil s apparatus
I.S.Sieves
Weighing balance.

THEORY:
Attrition of rock specimen is no longer determined and in
keeping with the tendency to test Aggregate in bulk, particles is prescribed by
B.S 812 part 113: 1990.
Aggregate particles between 14 and 10.2 mm with flaky particles remov
ed are embedded in Resin in a single layer. The sample is subjected to attrition
in a standard machine, the grinding lap being turned 10,000 revolutions. The ag
gregate attrition value is defined in terms of the percentage Loss in mass on at
trition so that the high value denotes the low resistance to attrition.
PROCEDURE:
Clean and dry aggregate sample confirming to one of the grading A to G is used f
or the test.
Aggregate weighing 5 Kg for grading A, B may be taken as test specimen and plac
ed in the cylinder.
The Devil s machine consists of two hollow cylinders of diameter 20 cm and length
34 cm mounted in such a way that the cylinder rotate about a horizontal.
Two tests may be carried simultaneously using both cylinders. The machine is ro
tated at a speed of 30 to 33 rpm.
After 10,000 revolutions the material is sieved on 1.18 mm I.S sieve.
The material passing through this sieve is expressed as the percentage of origi
nal weight of the sample and is reported as the attrition value.
