Security Mag locks - Update
Dr. Stephen Flisk, Mark Bollinger, Lee Setter, Jason Matlock
Review of doors at all buildings with mag locks has taken place
Next week: April 12 - a MPS panel will be advocating before the Deputy Fire Chief
For a variance and to continue to the use of Mag locks
We do have letters of support from MPD and FD
We have to prove the following:
Already in compliance
Not to jeopardize the lives
That there is an undue hardship
Financial implications
And concerns with managing security
And that the locks will not be used to serve assembly areas - auditorium, gym or cafeteria
There is an incident documented regarding the impact of no Mag locks:
A student did let in others in the building and this could have been prevented with Mag locks.
Did a cost analysis of increased staffing - aprox - $2 million
REQUEST:
Please write about scenarios by Friday to Lee Setter
Should include scenarios of what has occurred for buildings w/out Mag locks
Lee.setter@mpls.k12.mn.us
SUGGESTION for the Panel:
Include crime data with in the neighborhoods
Q - What about the evening and the weekend?

Q- Should we train users of the building re: security

Q - If separate building and assets is somewhere like the auditorium - can the gym stay locked b/c
its separate?
Q- What about lock down drills - how will this change or be impacted?
Q - What else about engagement? What is the timeline of it? Where is the plan?
*Keep in mind it needs to involve how to change the climate - it has to work with students about
why we should not let in intruders - students can make bad choice and we need to talk about to
prevent that. We need to have an intentional effort of working in a secondary site b/c of where
students are developmentally. Our response when a school calls can not be we cant help you, It
cant be we dont have the money.
Request from principals:
To see communication/engagement plan - early to provide feedback
To do a walkthrough for building w/out Mag locks and review their cameras
To review the camera/security system w/ FAIR whose system is not compatible to the district
system
Need to have parents speak to their concerns - to make the case.
NEXT STEPS:
We are securing a meeting regarding the other concerns raised by principals in their letter
to the Superintendent.
Need to see communication/engagement plan
