Nine instructional events and corresponding cognitive processes:
(1) gaining attention (reception)
(2) informing learners of the objective (expectancy)
(3) stimulating recall of prior learning (retrieval)
(4) presenting the stimulus (selective perception)
(5) providing learning guidance (semantic encoding)
(6) eliciting performance (responding)
(7) providing feedback (reinforcement)
(8) assessing performance (retrieval)
(9) enhancing retention and transfer (generalization).
These events should satisfy or provide the necessary conditions for learning and serve
as the basis for designing instruction and selecting appropriate media (Gagne, Briggs &
Wager, 1992).

My example:
1. I can show pictures of different modes of transportation.
2. Which modes of transportation do you think are similar in English and Spanish?
(In this lesson I will teach them to recognize cognates of modes of transportation,
there are many words in English and Spanish that are the similar, for example taxi,
carro, etc).
3. How do you say I am going by? At this time the students were able to recall material
learned in previous lessons such as the verb to go , they would know already the
subject pronoun I. Students will try to make the right sentence, putting together the
words already learned or explained.
4. Give the students the correct spelling of the words while I show the pictures on the
smart board. (It amazes me how many new words the students can make up).
5. I will explain one more time how to write the correct sentences (Yo voy en carro a la
playa- I am going by car to the beach). Students have already learned to recognize
places (previous lesson).
6. The students will make their own sentences (this could be done individually or in
groups).
7. I will check their sentences, asking volunteers to write the sentences that they had
on the smart board. At this point the students had switched papers with other
students.
8. The students will check their classmates answers and they will grade it (this is only
participation points).
9. I could show pictures of other modes of transportation that are spelled totally
different in the target language plus the ones showed already.
