Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish
Stay hungry. Stay Foolish was the advice Steve Jobs gave the graduating class of
Stanford University of 2005. This means to never be satisfied with that you have, always push
yourself, and push yourself to do things other people have told you you werent capable of doing.
Steve Jobs is an American information technology entrepreneur, cofounder, chairman and chief
executive officer of Apple INC. and founder and CEO of Next and Pixar. As he tells his life
story, starting from when he was born, along with an over all important message that he learned
while growing up. Job uses his life story to portray emotion to the audience as well as his
achievements and the facts to motivate the graduating class to keep on looking forward in life,
which resulted to be powerful and effective towards everyone at the ceremony.
Steve Jobs is an important man that came to be due to his success in many companies,
one that is mostly know as Apple INC. As Jobs gives his speech at the Stanford graduation of
2005, he explains his life and all of the challenges that opened many doors to the development of
these companies. Since everyone is familiar with his products, he takes advantage of this
opportunity to tell his story of how it all came to be as a motivational speech towards the
students that are about to continue their journeys by using ethos.
Ethos is the reputation and trustworthiness of the speaker, and he does this as he mentions the
successful companies he first continued to developed. Steve Jobs basically gives his bibliography
of his own life, his journey and what he has become. Even though he was a successful man, he
did not do what most of the people would do, go to college. After dropping out of Reed College,
he was free to take any classes he wanted without actually enrolling, one of them being

calligraphy. Having this education from Reed College allowed him to begin his long year works,
something the graduating students can take into account and apply it to their journey in the
future. As these words were spoken, students realized the true effect school has. Yes, school get
you degrees that allow you to work at a higher paying job as well as to get more benefits, but if
you work hard enough and follow your dreams without going to college, anything is possible.
Later in life, Steve Jobs was diagnosed with cancer, and he received the news that he had no
more than a few months to live. Since he was a victim of cancer, hearing the depressing news of
not being able to see a bright future ahead of you was really depressing for Steve Jobs. He knew
what the struggle was going day by day knowing that your life can end at any moment. This later
changed when the doctors found out, pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery (Youve
Got). Hearing the words of someone that had to go trough the process of having cancer gives the
audience an understanding of the challenges they face. In this case, the audience received the
information given because Jobs was credible since he was the one going trough the process of
being treated for cancer.
The words of wisdom being spoken by Jobs is implied to everyone at the ceremony, but
most importantly to those graduating. He makes a use of pathos, his emotions and cultural
beliefs, to ensure that he convinces the audience to feel the same emotions he went trough and
how he overcame many of the hardships he faced in life. It all started when he dropped out of
college. Jobs mentions to the graduating class of 2005 that he no longer wanted to continue to
waste his parents money, all of my working-class parents savings were being spent on my
college tuition (Youve Got). By mentioning this, it allows the audience to think about what
their lives could of been if they had stopped going to college and wonder where in life they
would be at. Depending on each individual in the audience, they all experience a different

emotion that all related to the same idea that Jobs was trying to give you. Steve jobs goes on by
mentioning how when he started Apple, he ended up being fired, from his own company, How
can you get fired from a company you started? (Youve Got). Someone who put all his effort
and work into a company that started to be successful and was being copied by many other
computer softwares, was fired from what he first started. Although this was a challenging time
for Steve Jobs, he faced the situation and overcame it by starting another company. This was
once difficult time out of the many he had to encounter and overcame. The sad times of his life
did not allow him to give up on what he wanted to do. In fact, it opened many other doors such
as being the cofounder of a company called NeXT and Pixar. This message goes out to the
graduating class in order for them to keep on going forward with their careers even after being
rejected. The words he gave to the audience that day were motivational and emotional in order to
convey that even when challenges are thrown your way, there are many other paths you can take
that might take you into a successful future.
The purpose of the speech that Steve Jobs decided to give at the ceremony was for
motivational purposes with the use of logos. There were words of wisdom coming from Jobs
own experience in life which allowed him to successfully portray the hard work he had to do
along with some challenges he encountered. Jobs decides to share with the public three of his
personal and most important stories and by the end of his speech he gives the audience the over
all message which is, Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life (Youve
Got). What is being thrown to the audience with this saying is pure facts. It is the honest truth
with no emotion that you should live life the way you wanted to live and don't let anyone else
bring your dreams or goals down. As he mentioned in his speech, many disadvantages crossed
his way but along with those disadvantages came other opportunities that he was able to

accomplish. The way Steve Jobs organized the way he presented his stories, from the oldest to
that present day, allowed him give the audience a sense of the journey that brought him too that
stage. It allowed the audience to capture and live his life in that moment. As for the message
towards the graduating class, they are the ones taking this advice and applying it into their future
lives. It is a way in which they will grow stronger and be successful in the long run.
Over all, Steve Jobs, a successful man who developed most of the popular companies
known world wide, motivated the graduating class of 2005 of Stanford University by using what
we know as pathos, logos, and ethos, which ended up being effective towards everyone in the
graduation ceremony, not only the graduates. Steve jobs objective was given to the audience
trough personal stories that got him to where he is now and was successful along the way. The
graduating class received this speech as a push since they are about to start their journey after the
college graduation. In a way they are receiving feedback and support from someone who has
struggle in order to be successful.
