Reflective Statement for Physical Education

To teach physical education in an elementary school a teacher must have a concrete
understanding of how the body works and how to properly nourish it, in order to provide
students with the information they need to maintain a physically active, healthy lifestyle. A
physical education teacher must also understand how to teach locomotor skills, non-locomotor
skills, and manipulative skills, in an age appropriate manner, so that every student can be
successful. Finally, a teacher must have the classroom management skills necessary to create an
atmosphere where every student has both the opportunity and confidence to achieve his or her
personal fitness goals.
My Physical education classes have supplied me with understanding of the basics of
physical fitness. In both KIN 425: Physical Education in the Elementary School and KIN 447:
Dance education in elementary school, I learned how to teach a variety of physical skills. I also
learned techniques to organize the class so that all students, those physically gifted and those
who are not, can get the most out of every fitness activity.
My artifact is a newsletter I created in KIN425. The only requirements for the project
were that it was to be written to your students parents, it had to include your personal goals for
physical education, and it had to provide information for a month long physical education lesson.
I chose this artifact because it shows that I know how create a health related physical education
lesson that addresses many different aspects of physical fitness. It also shows that I have an
understanding of how to take a sport and teach the fundamental skills needed in order to play the
sport more effectively.
