Machine Guns: Definition

It is a weapon operated by a mechanism,


able to deliver a fast and continous fire of
bullets as long as the trigger is pressed.

Machine guns could shoot hundreds of rounds


of ammunition a minute and the standard
military tactic of World War One was the infantry
charge. Many soldiers barely got out of
their trench before they were killed.

In 1914, all infantry battalions were equipped


with a machine gun section of two guns.
These were equipped with Maxim guns. It
had a maximum rate of fire of 500 rounds.

The experience of fighting in the early


clashes (First Battle of Ypres) proved that the
machine guns required special tactics and
organization.

A single well-placed and protected machine gun


could kill great range of attacking infantry. And
multiple machine guns, were a very destructive
defensive weapon.
