Best Answer: Both are High yield strength steel cold twisted deformed bar as per IS 1786 but

the
main difference is that Yield Stress or 0.2% proof stress of fe 415 is 415 N/Sqmm and that of fe 500 is
500 N/sqmm. Fe415 is better for housing construction.
Rest of difference is given below:
1. Chemical composition:
Constituent/ Fe415 / Fe500
Carbon / 0.30 / 0.30
Sulphur / 0.06 / 0.055
Phosphorus/ 0.06 / 0.055
Sulphur & Phosphorus / 0.11 / 0.105
2. Elongation per cent,Min,on gauge length 5.65 sqrt( A) where A is the cross sectional area of the
test piece:
Fe415 :14.5
Fe500 :12.0
3.Tensile Strength,Min:
Fe415 :
10% more than the actual 0.2% proof stress but not less than 485N/mm .sq
Fe500 :
8% more than the actual 0.2% proof stress but not less than 545N/mm.sq

(HYSD) High Yield Strength Deformed bar.

max strain in fe415 is 0.0038N/mm2
max strain in fe500 is 0.0042N/mm2

(TMT) Thermo mechanically treated

TOR is a brand name - Toristeg Steel Corporation of Luxembourg. Their name

(TOR) became synonymous with Cold Twisted Deformed (CTD) steel bars due
to popularity.
TOR and TMT are both high strength reinforcement steel bars wherein TOR
refers to cold treated bars and TMT refers to hot treated bars.

History : Round plain steel bars dominated the construction industry till
seventies. Thereafter CTD (or TOR Steel) dominated the industry till nineties.
Nowadays TMT or hot treated bars are the most popular due to its advantages
over CTD (TOR) such as high strength and corrosion resistance.
Some of the popular grades of high Strength steel bars (either hot or cold rolled)
are listed in the following table.
