Final Report: TI Field Experience
Student: Matthew Safi
Co-operating Teacher: Jennifer Irwin
School: Lower Canada College
McGill Supervisor: Scott Armstrong
Ithas been an absolute delight working with Matthew for the last sixteen
weeks. From the moment he began, he conducted himself in a conscientious and
professional manner, and | couldn't be happier with his progress as a teacher.
Matthew took the time to contact me in june to ask about the English
curriculum and worked the summer to prepare himself to take over class in
September. As such, his subject-specific knowledge was very well developed. Not
only did he come prepared with lessons, but he was also able both to adapt and to
develop lesson plans according to the needs and interests of his students. As such, |
had complete confidence in Matthew as I handed over my classes to him; | knew the
course material would be taught in a skilled and engaging manner, and I was right.
In terms of classroom engagement and management, | can say that Matthew
won his students aver almost from the beginning. His sense of humor and easy
going manner put them at ease, and they understood almost implicitly that he was
was there to help them in any way he could. As the weeks progressed, and he gained
a better sense of the kind of behaviour he expected from his students, his ability to
manage the class developed, as well. He was both well liked and well respected by
his students, which is not an easy feat, even for the most seasoned teachers.
Likewise, Matthew was a dream colleague, and quite popular within our
middle school community. His dedication to his profession made him easy to work
with, but his personality, overall, made him a delight to be around. He will be greatly
missed by all of us.
From the time that Matthew entered the school, he sought to immerse
himself in the community in any way he could. He worked with Clay Bertoia as an
assistant coach for both the junior and senior boys soccer teams, and made himself
available for practices, games and even weekend tournaments. He was also an
integral part of our advisory system and went on field trips, sat with the students at
lunch and during recess and was present for book club meetings, none of which was
expected of him, but all of which he did with enthusiasm and his usual good humor.
I'd like to state, overall, that think Matthew will make an exceptional
teacher, not only for the above reasons, but also because he isa kind man, with a
great heart, who seems to genuinely enjoy spending his time with young people. His
enthusiasm for teaching was palpable throughout his time with me, and | know that
he will make a real difference in the lives of his students some day, ifhe hasn‘t
already.
