Kosher Food

What would Jesus have eaten

and what food rules did he
follow?

Jewish Dietary Laws

Kosher in Hebrew means clean or fit and
describes food that is okay to eat for Jewish
people.
Non-kosher food is known as Treifah.
In Judaism there are many food rules that
must be followed.

1st Rule
Types of meat
The Torah tells us we may only eat the meat
of land animals that;
1. Have cloven hooves

2. Chew their own cud

Kosher fish and other sea creatures must;

1. Have fins
2. Have scales

Kosher birds or poultry must;

1. Not be a bird of pray
2. Only eat grain

2nd Rule
Do not mix meat and milk
You shall not boil a kid goat in its
mother's milk.
Deuteronomy 14:21

Due to this quote above Jews do not mix meat

products with any dairy products as it is seen to be
unclean.
Fruit and Vegetables
All fruit, vegetables and grain foods are kosher and
can be eaten with both meat and milk products.
Although they must be washed and checked for
insects before eating.
Some bugs are permitted but Rabbis
are not longer sure which ones!

3rd Rule
Kosher Kitchen
Two sets of
utensils

A kosher household will have at least two

sets of pots, pans and dishes: one for meat
and one for dairy.
Also it is Jewish tradition to wait a
significant amount of time between eating
meat and dairy. This can vary from 3 to 6
hours.

The animals that may be eaten must be

slaughtered in accordance with Jewish law.

4th Rule
All animals must
be killed
according to
Jewish Law

The method of slaughter is a quick, deep

stroke across the throat with a perfectly
sharp blade. This method is painless, causes
unconsciousness within two seconds, and is
widely recognized as the most humane method
of slaughter possible.

Why are these food laws

important to the Jewish people?
Because the Torah tell us.
For the traditional Torah observant Jew they
do not need any other reason.
In order to show obedience and
respect to God.
To follow the kosher rules reminds the
Jewish people of who they are.
It is also seen to be healthy to follow these rule.
