Project Report
I noted my final project as follows in my learning agreement:
Project plan: To virtually work with supervisors to gain more experience and knowledge
in writing, copyediting and InDesign through phone calls, skype, emails and in-person
meetings (March 13-20). The centerpiece of my portfolio will be the print magazine I
design in InDesign and copyedited stories for.
As I worked on the magazine, I learned that the potentials for designing a cover are
expansive. For my final project, I was able to design a mock cover with three two-page spreads
for the magazine. Although none of these mockups are solidified in their use for the final
magazine, I will be working diligently over the summer to create a final design worthy of the
Giant magazine stand.
Designing the cover was hard, because Celebrity High has a distinct orange as their logo
color. I subdued that color in the cover, to give the magazine a look that Celebrity Highs target
demographics might like better. Within the magazine I subtly scattered orange throughout to
create a new attitude about the color.
It was interesting having that design challenge, because I learned a lot about ways to
appease a client without sacrificing your design integrity. I think the most important thing I
learned from designing the magazine that throwing out your first idea can pave the way to even
better ideas. You might be able to incorporate some elements from the first idea, but you should
never marry an idea in design, because clients have versatile demands and your vision might not
align with theirs.
