Cookie Sheet Magnetic Math Patterning ‘ Designed to meet this objective: Students will identify simple patterns of concrete objects. Students will use concrete objects to extend simple patterns. Yummy-looking cookies and a brightly-colored cookie sheet provide an irresistible way to practice essential early math skills—hands-on! What's Included * Magnetic cookie sheet ¢ 4 activity mats © 30 magnetic cookies * Vinyl storage pouch Getting Started Unwrap the cookies and invite children to examine them. Are all the cookies the same? How do they differ? Set the blue AB pattern mat on the cookie sheet. Point to the first row of cookies and ask a volunteer to place a matching cookie on top of each cookie shown in the first row. Then “read” the pattern aloud to help children hear its rhythm: “yellow cookie, blue cookie, yellow cookie, blue cookie." Does anyone know what color cookie should come next? Invite a child who answers correctly to continue the pat- tern. Repeat with the second row, and then invite children to make up their own alternating cookie pattern in the bottom row. Introduce the other activity mats in the same way. (See details on the back of this page.) When children are familiar with the activity, place the set in your math center for independent practice. For extra fun, bring in real cookies for children to eat—but be sure to have students make patterns with them first!
