primary focus of your activity, your intended actions, and the expectations
of your supervisor and/or organization/partners.
I will be involved in service learning this quarter through the class "Intro to
Sociology." In this course, students are asked to focus on aspects of sociology that
relate to our specific volunteer program. The sociology of education is one of the
main topics we will cover in this course, and it is the focus of my volunteer work.
The goal of my service learning is to help minimize the achievement gap in a
Seattle public school by tutoring students through an after-school program. I am
choosing to volunteer at Washington Middle School through the Pipeline project here
at the UW. Through my volunteer work, I hope to better understand the needs of our
community, and how I can continue to help even after my service learning is
complete.
The purpose of the after-school program at Washington MS is to close the
achievement gap in Seattle public school students. In many schools, students are
below the state average on standardized test scores, and we hope to help them
gain the skills they need to pass these tests and succeed in and out of school.
I hope to gain an understanding of our community's needs and how better to serve
those needs.
