Module EE3520 Electric and Magnetic Fields

(ELEB3, TCMB3)
COURSEWORK
Deadline: 3 PM, Wednesday 17 December 2014
(Completed coursework needs to be submitted to UG Office)
An inductor is to be made up of a three-limbed magnetic circuit with a coil wound
around the centre limb a shown below in Fig. 1 (not to scale). The effective length
-3
2
and cross-section of each of the outer limb is 0.6 m and 10 m whilst the
-3
2
corresponding dimensions of the centre limb are 0.2 m and 1.610 m . There are
1500 turns on the winding (coil) and the magnetization curve (B-H curve) for the
material of the magnetic circuit is given by the following table:

Determine the following:
(1) The current I1 required in the coil to produce a magnetic flux of 2 mWb in
the centre limb. (5 marks)
(2) The coil inductance L1 at this value of current. (1 mark)
(3) If a uniform airgap of =2 mm width is introduced into the centre limb (Fig.
2), determine how much the current I1 would need to be increased (I) in
order to maintain the stated value of flux in the centre limb. (3 marks)

(4) Estimate the new value of inductance L2 for (3) above. (1 mark)
(5) Draw electric circuit equivalents corresponding to the magnetic circuits
shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Calculate all reluctances for both the circuits.
(1+1+1=3 marks)
(6) The effect of the magnetic field in the airgap in Fig. 2 is to exert a magnetic
force Fm in the airgap which tends to close the airgap. If the density of
energy wm stored in the magnetic field in the airgap is

1 B02 ,
wm =
2 0
where B0 is the flux density in the airgap, find Fm. (2 marks)
(7) If a solid metal strip of the same width, ws as the central limb (ws=0.1 m) is
moving in the airgap at a uniform velocity, v (v=5 m/s) in the +z direction
with the airgap magnetic field B0 normal to the strip, calculate the
electromotive force e induced in the strip. (2 marks)
(8) Sketch the magnetic flux lines (flux plot) showing the direction of flux
density vector B in the magnetic circuit shown in Fig. 2 given the direction
of current in the coil as shown. Compare this flux plot with that produced by
the coil alone in air without the magnetic circuit. (1+1=2 marks)
(9) State any assumptions made. (1 marks)
