Night Final Essay

Night by Elie Wiesel is a story of cruelty and devastation. In the story a young boy is taken
to a concentration camp where he is separated from his family, except his father. He undergoes
pain and horrific events that turn into devastating memories. Elie Wiesel shows the reader that
relationships and the power of companionship can be ital through imagery and conflict.
Imagery is created using descriptive words and phrases to evoke a mental picture of the
scene. At the concentration camp you didn't get a lot of food so he was happy when his father
brought him a half portion of bread, battered for something he had found at the depot, a piece
of rubber that could be used to repair a shoe (Wiesel 73). This quote shows the theme because
it shows the father helping the son get food to keep him healthy and not be starved. In this
quote Elie is personally learning that it is important to help one another in order to survive. No
matter what it is if you love someone or care you will do everything in you to do what it takes to
help them. Even if that includes taking the clothes off of your back for them. Elie wanted to give
up at times but he said my father's presence was the only thing that stopped me. He was
running next to me, out of breathe, out of strength, desperate (Wiesel 86). This quote shows the
theme by showing them pushing each other to not give up, look for that one reason to keep
going. Not only did he use imagery to show the theme but he also used conflict.
A conflict is a struggle or disagreement. Elie was having an internal conflict when he said I
knew he was running out of strength, close to death and yet i had abandoned him (Wiesel 106).
This quote shows the theme because it shows his regret for not helping one of his companions

to survive with how he is feeling. Personally he learned that from then on out he would help
everyone as much as he could. When two gravediggers were throwing sick people into a wagon
someone told them to take his father, but he yelled he's not dead , Not yet ! (Weisel 87). He is
demonstrating the theme by not giving up on his dad and if he didn't have this relationship with
his dad, they would have killed him. Eli then realized that if he didn't keep looking out for him,
his death would be soon.
Elie has proved that relationships and the power of companionship can be vital to survival in
many ways. The theme is true in the real world because people depend on others every day for
different things. Elie wanted people to realize how important family is and how no matter what
you should always fight for them.
