    In1944,AnneFrankwassenttocampAuschwitz.Auschwitzwasanetworkof
    GermanNaziconcentrationcampsandexterminationcamps.There,Jewswereharshly
    puttoworkandkilled.AnneFrankwasseparatedfromherfatherthere.Auschwitz,also
    knowasAuschwitzBirkenau,firstopenedin1940.ItisoneofthelargestNazinetwork
    ofconcentrationandexterminationcamps.Itfirstbeganasadetentioncenterfor
    politicalprisonersbutitslowlybecamecampsforJewishpeopleandotherenemiesof
    theNazistate.

    Auschwitzisdescribedtobesurroundedbyfortifiedwalls,barbedwire,gas
    chambers,andcremationovens.LIfeatAuschwitzwasterrible.Whenyoufirstarrive,
    allofyourbelongingsaretakenawayandallyourhairisshavedoff.Youwouldbe
    givenprisonoutfitsandonepairofshoes.Usuallytheclotheswouldbethewrongsize.
    Afteryouwereregisteredintocamp,theywouldtattooanumberontoyourarmand
    transferyoutooneofthecampstodoforcedlabor.Ifyouareanewarrival,youwould
    bethrownintocruel,unfair,andhardtreatment.

    Amajorityofthepeoplewhoarriveddidnotknowthattheyweregoingtobe
    killed.Thepeoplewhowereunfittowork(children,elderly,pregnantwomen)weresent
    tobathhousesthatwereturnedintogaschambers.Oncetheywereinside,theywere
    exposedtoZyklonBpoisongaswhichkilledthemimmediately.Forthatreason,itis
    impossibletofindthecorrectnumberofpeoplewhowerekilledatthecamps.There
    weresomeprisonerswhowereabletoescapeforthegaschambersbuttheyalleither
    diedfromdisease,brutallivingconditions,malnutrition,execution,torture,overwork,or
    stress.

    Auschwitzisthereasonwhymanyfamiliesweresplitapart.Attheend,manyof
    theseparatedfamilieswereneverreunitedagain.Auschwitzcausedmanytragedies
    andsadness.ManypeoplewhoexperiencedanythinglikeAuschwitzwereneverthe
    sameastheywerebefore.Attheendofallthehorror,somepeoplewereableto
    survive.OneofthosepeoplewereAnneFranksfather,OttoFrank.BecauseofOtto
    Frank,AnneFranksdiarywaspublishedandthepeopleoftheworldwereabletoknow
    aboutherstory.
