Cough Suppressants & Expectorants


Cough is protective reflex, is purpose
being expulsion of respiratory secretions
or foreign particles from the lungs and
upper airway passages.
Cough may be useful (productive:
sputum is coughed up/drain the airway or
useless (non-productive/dry)
Useless cough should be suppresed

Types of cough
Classified based on duration,
characters, qualifity and timing
Acute: sudden on set/less than 3
weeks
Sub acute: 3-8 weeks
Chronic: longer than 8 weeks

Drug for cough


Cough can be treated as a symptom
(non-spesific therapy) or with spesific
remedies (antibiotic,etc).
Non-spesific therapy
Pharyngeal demulcent: Lozenges,
cough drop, linctuses containing
syrup, glycerine, liquarice.

Expectorants
Directly acting
Sodium and potassium citrate or
acetate, potassium iodide, guaiacol,
guaphenesin (glyceryl guaiacolate).
Mucolytics
Bromhexin, ambroxol,
acetylcysteine, carbazibamine.

Antitusives
Opioids
Codein, pholacodein, ethylmorphine,
morphine.
Non-opioids
Noscarpine, dextromethorpan, corladin,
chlorphedianol.
Antihistamines
Chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine,
promethazine.
