Factors in Designing of Pits and Septic Tank

Problems:
1. A wet pit latrine is to be used by 35 people for a period
of 2 yrs. and non-degradable corncobs are used for
anal cleansing. The base of the pit is to be 1.2m x
1.2m square. Find the depth of the pit.

2. Design a square septic tank with a depth of 3m. It is

used by 10 people living in rural areas for toilet waste
and sullage. S = 0.040 cu.m per person per year. The
average air temperature in an area is 19o Celsius. The
volume of waste water treated per day is 6.5m 2, 4 yrs
between desludging. The depth of ventilation space is
300mm.
