Professional Speaker Analysis

I had the opportunity to attend the 16th Annual Leadership Conference at

Utah Valley University on Monday, October 26, 2015. The title of the
conference was Come Alive. Hoan Do was the keynote speaker in the
conference. He was an excellent speaker, who taught me a great deal on
how to look at life with a positive attitude, as well as being energetic and to
always smile.
Organization
Hoan Do taught me many things in his speech. He had three main points.
The first main point was to Choose the Right Attitude. A great example
Hoan gave us to go along with this was to change the radio station. To
change your radio station means to change your thinking. If you hear
something that you dont like, cut it out and change the things you listen to.
Another main point he gave us was to Find Your Right Outfit. By finding
your right outfit, you are finding your passion in life. It is the job you aspire to
do. There are many opportunities for all of us in life. Although you might not
find your calling/opportunity right away, be patient and it will come. The third
point was to Make Meaningful Connections.Hoan Do suggested to have a
mentor, mentee, and a mate. A mentor is someone who teaches you things,
and whom you learn from. Mentees are people you help out. A mate is a
friend, in which you help out eachother. When you make friends in high
school, most of the time you dont realize that you will be lifelong friends.
Make meaningful connections with people, because you never know who you
could end up networking with. A simple conversation could turn into a future
job opportunity, and it could even lead to you Find Your Right Outfit.
The organizational pattern Hoan Do used was Cause and Effect. In his speech
Hoan Do used examples of cause and effect in his personal life. An example
of effect he gave us was to Choose the Right Attitude. Hoan then gave us
the example of Cutting Out Whack Songs. Hoan Do used inductive
reasoning, which is using examples that tie into your general claim. He gave
us an example of Choosing the Right Attitude and that he was a wrestler in
high school, and was constantly struggling to do well, but he then tied in the
Effect of Choosing the Right Attitude and he told himself that as long as he
1

can look in the mirror and tell himself that he tried his absolute hardest, he
would finally feel good about himself.

Supporting Material
Ethos
Ethos is defined as the way a speaker, or someone can convince other
people. It is complete credibility. Hoan Dos biography is stated as Hoan Do
is a student success coach, author, and competitor in NBCs hit show,
American Ninja Warrior. From an early age, Hoan understood the sacrifices
his parents had made in their escape to the United States during the
Vietnam War. Feeling indebted to his parents for their courageous pursuit of
a better life, Hoan vowed to ensure that one day, he would be able to take
care of his parents. Hoans hard work took him to Malibu, Cali, where he
attended Pepperdine University. Recognized as the best youth mentor by the
International Examiner, Hoan travels across North America speaking at
colleges, high schools, and student leadership conferences where he shares
practical advice that helps students to succeed in and out of school. Hoans
engaging style and ability to share important life lessons in a way that
resonates with his audiences has earned him the Verizon Wireless Motivator
Award. Hoan Do demonstrated Ethos by telling us that life is challenging,
but we need to be positive and choose a good attitude to be successful. An
example he used of choosing the right attitude was to Change Your Radio
Station. If people are able to do this, then they wont get upset or down on
themselves when someone says something rude to, or about them. Once you
hear something you dont like, Cut Out that Whack Song. Dont let it affect
you and forget it once and for all.
Pathos
Pathos is defined as communicative persuasion according to the audiences
emotions. Hoan Do demonstrated Pathos through his jokes. He analyzed his
audience in advance, and made sure that all of the topics he spoke about
related to our age level. He then proceeded to plot what style of
communication would keep teenagers most attentive. A large majority of
teenagers are fans of comedy, so Hoan used it as a main ingredient in his
speech. One main example of a comedy scene he did in his speech was him
dancing and singing in a cheerleader costume. Not only did it back up his
information he was speaking to us about, he was able to keep our attention
which then allowed us to better understand the information he was trying to
give us. Hoan Do also used exaggeration as a form of Pathos. He used it
heavily in his facial expressions, associated after his humor. An example of
this was when he said Hold Up, Thats Whack. He shrieked his face back
and gave us a flabbergasted look.
2

Logos
Logos is defined as an act of persuading your audience by reason, as well as
using logistics. Hoan Do had Logos in every topic he spoke to us about in his
speech. You have to use logistics to convince people ethically as well as
emotionally. Hoan Do used stories in his speech that put his audience in
situations that happen to us in our everyday lives. An example of Logos in
Hoan Dos speech was when he told us to Lower Our Stress, to Increase Our
Success. This is a great examples for teenagers, especially for those who
are involved in other activities as well, outside of school. Students are
extremely stressed out these days, and from personal experience, I know
that when you stress out, your productivity level drops. Your brain doesnt
allow things to process clearly. This is a fact of life. Therefore it was logic
which reinforced his speech. Take a deep breath and tell yourself you can do
anything you put your mind to. Hoan also spoke to us about not only
becoming outstanding student leaders, but also Leaders of Today, NOT
Tomorrow! We need to take action today and not put things off. This relates
to company as well. As you hear from a majority of graduates,
procrastination is a main production drainer. Right when you get a project
start on it with no hesitation. This will translate to being a leader of today,
because your other employees will see you being a productive leader and it
will inspire them to become one as well. Hoan Do spoke to us about
Succeeding in the REAL World. He mentioned that a majority of what we
need to know, we dont learn in high school. Hoan told us we need to be able
to create a clear plan of action to reach or goals and dreams. Thanks to
company, we will be many steps ahead of normal high school students, due
to the fact of us having learned how to set goals, and where to write our
goals, and how to play them out.
Delivery
Hoan Do was a very prepared public speaker. He used many nonverbals that
helped us understand what he was trying to get across our minds. A main
nonverbal I observed was his hand gestures. He was constantly using his
hands to make movement that would help aid his topic of speech. Although
there was one thing that impressed me the most about his hand gestures. He
constantly had new hand gestures to keep us engaged and focused, while
most other professional speakers only use a few different hand gestures.
Another nonverbal that Hoan used was eye contact. He always made sure to
never focus on just one section of the auditorium, but on all. Hoan Do also
moved around the stage well. Many speakers stand behind a podium and just
speak, however Hoan moved around to keep the attention of the audience.
One thing that helped Hoan Do with his speech were his visual aids. He used
a PowerPoint to present his info, but on the PowerPoint there wasnt much
3

writing. Each slide had keywords and detailed photos on it. He would present
the photo to us, and then proceed to explain in detail what each photo
meant, or described. Hoan Do did a great job of keeping us focused with the
PowerPoint rather than having it distract us. Another main visual aid that
Hoan Do used was his cheerleader costume. This was a great visual for us to
catch our attention and then focus in on the points he was making.
Motivation
Motivation is a critical element of any speech. It is the background of Pathos,
Ethos, and Logos. Hoan Do was very motivational, and inspirational in his
speech. After attending his speech, I had one of the most powerful feelings of
motivation so far in my life. One of the main reasons, was because he used
examples that are similar to situations that have occurred in my life. The
examples are similar in ways, but not exactly the same. He mentioned that
when he was a wrestler in high school, himself as well as others never
thought he was good enough, even though he was a good wrestler. At this
time Hoan Do wasnt living his life from the perspective that he is now.
Luckily from the teachings of my parents over the years, I have always been
a positive and determined person. I was taught to be happy, but never
satisfied. I have accomplished many things in the classroom, as well as on
the soccer field. The way that my life relates to Hoans is that even when I
accomplish something or dont accomplish something, Im never satisfied.
Im always striving to become better, because I know I havent used my full
potential. Hoan Do has motivated me to continue to strive for greatness and
to tell myself all the time that I am good enough, even if I dont perform well
in the classroom or on the field that day. Instead I need to Change My Radio
Station and be better the next day. Hoan Do has also motivated me to not
be negative or get down on myself by using the Youll Always Be Judged
tactic. Like Hoan mentioned, you will always be judged no matter what you
do, but at the end of the day you need to Cut Out Those Whack Songs that
you hear from negative people, and move on to living a positive life.
