GIS Tutorial was used for several years in GIS courses at Carnegie Mellon University before it went co ESRI Press for publication. During this time, che students and teaching assistants at che university who used che book in their classes provided us with significane feedback. Their thoughtful comments guided our revisions and helped improve the content and overall qualiy of this book. Faculey at other universities who have taught GIS using drafts of GIS Tutorial have also provided valuable feedback. They include Don Dixon of California State University at Sacramento, Mike Rock of Columbus State Community College, Piyusha Singh of Seate University of New York ac Albany, An Lewis of the University of Pictsburgh, and George Tita at the University of California at Irvine. ‘We are very grateful to the many public servants and vendors who have generously supplied us ‘with interesting GIS applications and dara, including Kevin Ford of Facilities Management Services, Carnegie Mellon University; Barb Kviz of the Green Practices Program, Carnegie Mallon University; Noor Ismail and Mike Homa of the City Planning Department, City of Pittsburgh; Richard Chapin of infoUSA Inc.; Pat Clark and Traci Jackson of Jackson Clark Partners, Pennsylvania Resources Council; Cdr. Kathleen McNeely, Sgr. Mona Wallace, and John Shultie of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police; Chief Robert Duffy, Lt. Todd Baxter, Lt. Michael Wood, and Jeff Cheal of che Rochester, New York, Police Department; Kirk Brethauer of Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (www.speregion.org); and Tele Ath for use of its USA datasets contained within the ESRI Data & Maps 2004 Media Kit. Finally, thanks to the team at ESRI who tested, edited, designed, and produced this book. Preface GIS Tutorial s the direct result of the authors’ experiences teaching GIS to students at high schools and universities, as well as working professionals. GIS Tucorial is a hands-on workbook char takes the reader from the basis of using AreGIS Deskcop interfaces to performing advanced spatial analysis. Instructors can use this book in the classroom, or the individual can use i for self-study. Ifyou are new to ArcGIS Desktop and are using this book as a self study guide, we recommend you work through the eucorials in order. However, che eutorials are independent of each other, and you can use them in the order that best fies you or your class's needs. In cutorial 1, readers will learn the basis of working with existing GIS data and maps, In tutorials 2 and 3, readers will learn how to build maps from GIS data and how to create, then add, graphs and reports to their maps. The exercises in tutorial 4 teach the reader how to create xgeodatabases and impore data into them. Tutorial 5 has che reader explore the basic data types used within GIS and use the Internet to gather GIS data. Editing spatial data is a large part of eee ee cee and transform data to match real-world coordinates. In eurorial 7, che reader will learn how to ‘map address data as points through a process called address geocoding. In tutorials 8 and 9, the reader performs spatial analysis using geoprocessing tools and analysis workflow models. New to this edition, eutorials 10 and 11 provide instructions for two ArcGIS extensions. Chapter 10 introduces AteGIS 3D Analyse, allowing readers to create 3D scenes, conduct ly-throughs, build animations, and conduct line-of sight studies. Finally, chapter 11 introduces ArcGIS Spatial ‘Analyst for ereating and analyzing raster layers, including hillshades, density maps, ste suitability surfaces, and risk estimation surfaces To reinforce the skills learned in the step-based exercises and to provoke critical problem-solving skills, here are Your Turn casks and advanced assignments within each tutorial. The quickest way to increase your GIS skills isto follow step-based content with independent work. The Your Turn tasks and assignments provide this important follow-up by having the reader perform tasks and solve problems without the aid of step-by-step direction. This book comes with a CD with exercise and assignment data, and a DVD with a 180-day tial of ArcView 9.3. You will need to install the software and the data in order to perform the exercises in this book, (Ifyou have an earlier version of ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo installed, ‘you will need to uninstall i) Instructions for installing the data and the software that come with this book are included in the appendix.
