Chapter 16: World War I and Its Aftermath

World War I began in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia and triggered a series of alliances that drew more countries into the conflict. The U.S. initially remained neutral but was drawn into the war in 1917 when Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare and sank American merchant ships. Over 2 million American troops were deployed to Europe with the goals of helping the Allies defeat Germany and making the world safe for democracy. New technologies like tanks, planes, and chemical weapons led to brutal trench warfare with immense casualties. Though inexperienced, American forces helped halt several German offensives and opened a gap in their lines during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive
