CHARACTERS

In the first dayby Edward Jones there are 2 very significant characters. The first
character is the young girl going to kindergarten. She is approximately 4 to 5 years old. She
plays a lot with her 2 younger siblings. She also considers Miss. Mary and Miss. Blondelle , her
two neighbors, to be her family. This shows that she is a warm, loving and accepting person
overall. Her two younger sisters were being taken care of by Miss Mary and Blondelle showing
that they were also trusted by the family. The young girl also plays with a lot of her friends in the
neighborhood which shows that she is very social and outgoing. Between her preference in
schools, she seems to prefer Walker Jones over Seaton elementary school. The reason she
prefers Walker Jones is because its more modern than Seaton elementary school. Throughout
the story, she remains a very static character. she is also a simplistic character because she is
just a typical kindergartener;curious, playful and learning new words. The second significant
character is the little girls mother. She is a mother of 3 young girls, of which the oldest is going
to kindergarten. She is also a christian who goes to Mt. Carmel baptist church. The reason she
wants her daughter to go to Seaton is because it is right across her church and she believes
that God is going to watch her daughter because she is right across from him. This shows that
she is a loving mother who wants the best for her kids. Later we learn that she is illiterate when
she is sent to Walker Jones and has to fill a form in order for her daughter to join the school.
She is also humble because she asks for help with the form. She is very static because she she
doesnt go through a lot of change throughout the story. To her daughter, she is the perfect
mother even though she is illiterate .
