Icarus:Visual

Representations of Icarus can differ and be similar in many ways. The use of literary and
artistic skill makes the similarities and differences rather easy to cite. In Ovids passage ,
(Icarus) , from the epic poem The Metamorphosis he emphasizes the carelessness and
neglectance Icarus shows toward his father until he is in need however , the artist Pieter
Bruegel , in his painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus , illustrates the understanding that
Icarus is now the one experiencing neglectance through his use ofskillfulshadingandemotion
ofthesurroundings.

Neglectance and carelessness plays the biggest role by showing each representations
meaning indepth.TheapathyshownbyIcarusismadeclearbyOvids,(Icarus),passagefrom
The Metamorphosis through the actions of Icarus and his father. Icaruss father goes into
explicit detail of his instructions toward Icarus. Although his father is showing concern Icarus
continues to neglect him and present no care at all. His father lets out his last meaningless
words toward Icarus and kisses him on his cheek as if he was warned of what the future held.
Icaruss neglectance towards his fatherissoonregrettedashislifewasthecost.Abstracttothe
epic poem , Pieter Bruegels painting Landscape With the Fall of Icarus makes it obvious that
Icarus is , no longer giving , but receiving neglectance andnocare.Bruegelemphasizeshisby
modifying the placement and emotion around Icarus. Icarus is placed aside in the painting , in
no point of focus ,andalsodoes notaffecttheemotionsoractionsofanybeingsnearby.Icarus
is put through phases of neglectance and carelessness which concluded to turn out for the
worse.

Neglectance andcarelessnesswereeffectivelypresentedbytheemotionsettingcolorsinboth
representations. Ovids use of the blank , unemotional , color brought to mind , majorly
resembled the carelessness and neglectance taken place. Throughout the father son dialogue
Icarus showed no senseofurgencywithhisblankresponses.Similar toOvid,Bruegelprovided
the presentation through use of emotion setting color varietys. Within the area Icarus drowns
there is no sign of positivity due to the use of dark nonradiant shading. Outside of Icaruss
range there is a vast amount of attention drawing colors containing vibrance. This draws more
attentioninwhichleavesIcarusunseenandneglected.

THrough evidence of both representation there is neglectance and carelessness shown.
