DOG BITES

1. WOUND CARE
SKIN
Wash the wound with soap and rinse with running water for a long
time
Application of iodine or ethanol or any antiseptic may be done BUT
it is important to still wash with soap
MUCOUS MEMBRANE (eyes, mouth, etc)
Wash the wound with water or normal saline (0.9% Sodium
Chloride) for a long time
2. HISTORY AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
Ask and write/document
Time of bite
Is the dog a pet or a stray?
Was the dog poked, stepped-on, or pushed before biting?
Was the dog drooling, barking excessively or exhibiting other
unusual behavior?
Physical Examination
Document what part of the body was bitten/clawed-on
Record if there is active bleeding
3. Call the Expat ER MD for further evaluation
