Alignment is realized when the business strategy, functions, employees, business processes and
technology are optimized for growth and profitability resulting in substantial shareholder returns.
I am a staff of Defence Procurement Organization where the biggest opportunity is aligning itself
to the rest of the organization. However, all staff is not working for a shared purpose and is not
contributed to the core strategies of the organization toward the accomplishment of its purpose.
Lack of understanding and visibility into the business goals, priorities, and demands frequently
results in funding decisions for projects that provide little or no value to the business. If theres a
change to a business goal, priority or a project timeline the business cannot easily determine the
impact. In fact business leaders, including me, are unable to understand the impact and
dependencies of change.
Large Procurement programs are multivariate and require the commitment of several executives
and organizations to be successful. To improve the ability to align, the following steps should
have taken:

Communicate early to combat the most common complaints in the organization.

Identify key internal and external stakeholders, mapping their positions and pinpointing
any misalignment of interests. Look for hidden agendas and coalitions.

Assess stakeholders' tolerance and motivation for change.

Pinpoint and address conflicting interests among stakeholders.

Recognize and otherwise reward colleagues who support team alignment.
