The variance and interaction of the different vortex
shedding patterns dependent on the vibration frequency
can be explained in terms of the cylinder velocity. When the amplitude ratio is fixed, the velocity of the vibrating cylinder varies directly with the frequency. The faster velocity of the cylinder or the higher frequency ratio will cause a stronger secondary vortex. In Table 2 we give the velocity ratio for the oscillating cylinder and the incident flow with the velocity defined as the maximum value of the oscillating velocity. A lot of experiment results have shown that the velocity of the downstream moving vortex street U.o, follows the relation of U~s ~ 0.80U~ with the incident steady flow. So the velocity ratio of the vortex shedding and the incident flow may give us some information on the physical mechanism of the vortex shedding patterns in the future research
