INTRODUCTION:
Inmysixyearsofteaching,Ihavedoneverywellatgettingstudentstocomplyordiscipliningthose
whodidnot.Recently,IhavebeguntowonderhowIcouldchallengemystudentstodothingsnotjustbecause
theyhadto,butbecausetheytrulywantedto.Onesuchareastudentscoulddemonstratethismoreauthentic
manneroflearningandengagementisthroughdiscussion:namelystudentfacilitateddiscussionsinwhich
studentsvalueandhearallvoices.IadmitthatasateacherIhavefailedtoconsistentlyandthoroughlycreate
richenvironmentsinwhichconversationsamongstthestudentscanflow.IbelieveIcanbestdevelopasan
educatorbyexaminingthewaysinwhichIstructurediscussionsinmyclass.
AsanEnglishteacher,Iusediscussionfrequentlyhowever,whengoneunchecked,discussionsarean
instructionalstrategyparticularlypronetoallowingexistingsocialorderstoreproducethemselvesandto
discouragingfullparticipationofeveryoneintheclass.Evenatheterogeneousschoolsinwhichindividuals
valuediversityandcelebratedifference,thesamestereotypicallyquietvoicesfadeintothebackground,while
thesameassertivevoicesdominatetheconversations.Astudentsabilitytoarticulatetheirthoughtstoagroup
andparticipateindiscussionisrelevantnotonlyforsuccessinhighschoolandincollege,butalsoforsuccess
inworkplaces.Ifschoolsarecommittedtopreparingstudentsforcollegeandcareers,thendiscussionneedsto
beanintentionalfocusofeveryteacherspractice.
TheparticularissueIamconcernedwithisachievingmoreequitablediscussionsamongthestudents,
intermsoftimetalked,qualityofresponse,studentgeneratedquestions,andstudentfacilitationofthe
discussion.Iseektoexplorethefollowingresearchquestion:
Howdowecreateequitablestudentled
classroomdiscussionswherestudentsarefacilitatingandallstudentsareengaged?
