Abstract
Anaturallyoccurringsubstance,ibogaine,wastakenbysevenindividuals
whowereaddictedtoopiates.Ibogaine,analkaloidwithpsychotropiceffects
atdosesof200300mgandabove,wastakeninsingledosesof7001800mg
bythesubjectsinthestudy.Attheendofthe2438hrpsychoactiveperiod
inducedbythedrugatthesedoses,noneofthesubjectsdisplayedsignificant
opiatewithdrawalsymptoms.Atthelowestdoseof700mg,onesubject
recontinuedhisdrugabuseafter2daysoftheremainingsixindividualswho
took1,000mgorabove,tworelapsedafteranumberofweeks,onereverted
tointermittentheroinuse,andthreeappeartohaveremaineddrugfree14
weeksormoreafterundergoingthisexperimentaltreatment.Ibogainemaybe
ofvalueinthepresentandcouldserveasamodelforthedevelopmentof
improvedagentsforthetreatmentofsubstanceabuseinthefuture.
