Assessment of Learners with Visual Impairments

Learning Opportunities and Activities: Course Module for Training Teachers of Visually
Impaired Learners

CASE STUDY Mary, Grade 7

Mary is an academic student who functions on grade level in all subject areas and receives her
instruction in the general education setting for all academic subject areas. She is required to take
the GeorgiaMilestones for 7th grade in Reading, English Language Arts, Math, Science, and
Social Studies as per state and federal guidelines. However, in order to achieve her maximum
potential on the tests, she must have accommodations as allowed to accommodate for her visual
impairment.
Mary has a medical diagnosis of oculocutaneous albinism and nystagmus. Her most recent eye
report gives her visual acuities as 20/400 in each eye. Mary uses large print books for math and a
video magnifier to access her other textbooks. She uses screen magnification software to enlarge
the computer screen with a 32 monitor. She also has a 5X monocular that she uses for distance
viewing and a 3X handheld magnifier that she uses for spot reading and short passages. She is
very sensitive to glare. She is also light sensitive (photophobic). She wears a visor when indoors
to reduce glare and solar shields when outdoors for light sensitivity. She needs at least 15
minutes for her eye to accommodate after returning from outdoors in bright sunlight before she is
able to access materials visually.
