1. Marshal Plan- the US gave $13 million to European countries to help them rebuild after the war. The
US wanted to break down trade barriers and modernize industry to make Europe prosperous while
attempting to prevent communism.
- We ranked this as a Level 1 because the US was reaching out to help other countries in attempt to
build strong relationships.
2. Long Telegram- George Kenan wrote this to describe his views of the soviets. This was sensitive to
the judgement of force. He stated that dealing with the soviets was a large task.
- We ranked this as a Level 4 because he is picking on the Soviet Union and threatening their
power. The soviets did not see them being peaceful in the future. Kenan argued against the
soviets and stated the western world was more powerful which led to tensions and disagreements
among the two countries.
3. Berlin Airlift- the Soviets shut down road ways from Western occupied Berlin (Germany) to attempt
to occupy Berlin. The western allies were forced to airdrop supplies into Berlin.
- We ranked this as a Level 4 because the Russians attempted to gain control in Germany and cause
troubles for the Allies without giving a reasoning. This was another major conflict between the
Russians and United States/allies.
4. Fall of China to Communism- Soviet communists took over after a Chinese rebellion and the US
suspended diplomatic ties with China. This led to a civil war in China.
- We ranked this a Level 5 because there was conflict in China for many years after WWII and the
US suspended diplomatic ties with the PRC.
5. Korean War- the first fighting with two nuclear powers and first military conflict in the Cold War. It
began when North Korea Invaded the South and both used nuclear bomb. The US joined to help
South Korea.
- We ranked this a Level 5 because the two sides in Korea went to war and used atomic bombs to
kill many people. All the conflict did not move any borders or solve their issues.
