Breakthrough

AsfarasmybeliefgoesthebreakthroughinvolvedadeeperunderstandingofthecamerasEDMAC(External
DMAcontroller)andtakingcleancropsoftheimagebuffer.Unlikeintheburstmode,rawdataisnotconvertedto
DNGformatincamera,youhavetotranscodeittoDNGinpost.Thisisgoodbecauseyoucandoaveryhigh
qualitydebayeroftheimageonapowerfulPC.Tomyeyetheimagelooksbetterthanwiththepreviousnightly
buildsviaDNGburstmode.

Developerscannowwriteutilitiestoconvertthe5DsrawvideofilestoCinemaDNGcompatiblewithResolve
(notjuststandardDNG)andthecameracanstorerawclipsinasingle.rawfile.MagicLanternthemselves
currentlyprovideaconverterforWindows(raw2dng.exe),hencethecameraisfreeduptojustdumpthedata
fromtheimagesensordirecttothecard.

TheconvertercanalsooutputtoMJPEGifyouwanttoavoidtheworkflowandgetaprojectoutofthedoor
quicker.EvenwhenconvertedtoMJPEGitisahugestepupinimagequalityfromthefactoryH.264.Thecamera
nowhasarawvideomenuwhereyoucanchooseyourresolution,andevenapanningmode(likeadigitaldolly)

inthe1:1cropformats.Thepanningcanmovethesensorwindowaroundtheframewhilstrecording!Higher
resolutionsthan19201280area1:1cropofthesensor,upto35921320.Heresapartiallistofthecurrently
supportedresolutions:

Workflow

Raw2dng.exeiscurrentlyverysimpleandrunsatthecommandpromptinWindows,youspecifytherawfilename
andawayitgoes.AfterthatisdoneyousimplyimporttheDNGsasasequenceintoAfterEffects,thoughthereis
avarietyofotherwaystodoitnotinvolvingAdobesoftware.Thegoodthingisthatthecamerarecordstheraw
datatoONEsinglefileincamera,makingiteasiertomanageyourclipsonthecard.Theresnoplaybackofraw
incamerayet,butliveviewremainsonwhilstrecording.Iamsureathumbnailreferencecanbecreatedforclips
later.

ThiscontinuousrawrecordingmodecameaboutfromaseparatedevelopmentbranchofMagicLanterntothe
verycoolDNGburststillssilentpics.ItstartedoffasamoduletorecordrawYUV422imagedatatothecard.
TheburstmodeisstillinthereifyouneedDNGstraightoutofthecameraandthatwillremainasastillsfeature.

AlexofMagicLanternrewroteanentiremodule(lv_rec)tomakethishappenandyoucantakealookatsomeof
thesourcecodefortherawrecordingmodulehere.

Theworldjustexploded

YestheworldjustturnedonitsheadandIhavenoideawhattheimplicationsforthemarketaregoingtobeyet,
otherthanthatnowCanonsDSLRs,throughnoactionatallfromCanonthemselvesjustbecameawholelot
moreseriousascinemacameras.

Theresnodoubttherawimagesfromthe5DMarkIIIexceedthequalityyougetfromCanonsmuchmore
expensivecameras,liketheC300.The1DCnowalsohassomeseriouscompetitionfrommuchcheaper
DSLRs.IfeelBlackmagiccouldlosemostfromthisthough,andwillbeashameifthathappens.Ivenotyet
testedthemheadtoheadbutthesensorinthe5DMarkIIIisfarmorecapablethantheoneintheBlackmagic
CinemaCamerainmanywaysgeneratingcleanmoirefreeimagesespeciallyin1:1cropmodeandcleaner
highISOimagesfromamuchlargersensor.TheBMCCisnolongerasattractivetome.

The5DMarkIIIisnowtopdogforvideoquality,farsurpassingtheGH2andGH3.Allthisisrathertragic,
becausequitesimply,Canondontdeservethissuccess.ItisentirelyofMagicLanternsmaking,andtheydidit
forusfree.
