The media plays a central role in the development of unreasonable / fear.

Not deliberate. What is fundamentally at work, is human / nature.
Journalists are interested in the sensational story for the same reason audiences are interested in the
sensational story.
Give examples of two exciting stories. Tornados and terrorism
And two dull stories. - Diabetes and Asthma
The media is skewed
What was feared to be about to come from Africa? Killer Viruses (Ebola)
Why was this fear there? Because it was covered not only in media but also suspense novels and
movies. The fear of it was in the culture.
How many people died from this disease? 250 people died.
What then broke out? A Civil War broke out in Africa.
How many people died? 3 million people died.
Was it covered? No, it was not covered.
It didnt fit any existing Western storyline, it didnt fit any Western self-interest. It didnt feel like a
threat to us.
there was a spectacular disparity
the media follow established narratives.
Once there is a storyline, an arc, arcing through the media, the media like to pick up on
itTerrorism is a great demonstration of the power of the media narrative to shape how the media
portrays events.
Who was Timothy McVeigh? He was a white anti-gov. right wing radical.
What did he do? Detonates a bomb
Where? Oklahoma city
What year? 1995
that becomes the paradigm of Terrorism.
Militiasangry right / wingers, anti-government /radicals
What happened after 9/11? (Islamic radicals.)
and we rush out, go looking for facts and figures that support and advance that media / narrative
What happened in 2005? Hinrichs detonates himself outside a football stadium.
Where? Oklahoma City
Why of all places? Because it is the same place as where Timothy McVeigh detonated a bomb in
1995.

Have you heard of Joel Henry Hinrichs? Why not? No, because was not covered in media.
What did Hinrichs NOT fit? Hinrichs didnt hit the media narrative at the time of 2005. Had it been
1995, the situation might have been different.
