In Simon Shusters article on the refugee crisis, he talks about the life and struggles, of
the refugees located in Idomeni, Greece. Simons audience is anyone who is uninformed on the
current refugee crisis within Europe. The purpose of the article is to give people a closer look at
the life of refugees and what its like. The purpose can also be viewed as being, to make people
more aware of one of the largest issues that the European Union is facing. The subject of the
article are refugees seeking asylum, located in Idomeni, Greece.
The author uses pathos indirectly. Simon isnt making up any of the article, its all facts
as well as real photographs. However, many people may find that the facts and photographs of
struggling refugees are sad, depressing, and hopeless in a way. These emotions that arise are
very important, because if they were not present, the reader wouldnt find the topic nearly as
important. The logos are equally as crucial, this is because without the facts, there wouldnt be
very much emotional appeal. As previously mentioned, its the real facts and photographs of the
refugees that are the cause of the pathos found within the article. These two aspects of the article
go hand in hand.
This article has a very important connection with my position statement. My position
statement states that happiness is a choice and is something that cannot be chased or found in
materialistic things, but rather can only be found within ones self. However, this article shows
that a very unfortunate life situation may make it very difficult to find happiness within ones

self. But, the article doesnt attempt to disprove my position statement in any way. True
happiness can only be found in your self once you are accepting or your situation and grateful for
where you are right now, thats the bottom line. Although the article may seem like these very
unfortunate circumstances make it impossible for people to find happiness, its simply not true.
Sure, it may make it much more difficult to be happy with where you are, when you are being
kept at the border of a country, on a waiting list, to be accepted asylum, but its still very
possible.
