Two parallel shaft 6m apart are to be connected by a belt running over a pulley of
diameter 600 mm and 400 mm respectively. Find exact and approx lengths of belt
when belt is open and when belt is crossed.
An open belt drive is used to transmit 2.5 KW power. The belt is running at 2.5 m/sec
velocity over the pulleys. The angle of contact being 1650 and co-efficient of friction
being 0.3 what will be the effect on power transmission if the initial tension in belt is
increased by 8%
A belt 100 mm wide and 100 mm thick is transmitting power at 900 m/min. the
driving tension is 2.8 times the tension on the slack side. If the safe permissible stress
for the belt is 1.8 N/mm2, calculate the maximum power that can be transmitted at this
speed. Assume the density of leather belt is 1000 kg/m3. Consider the initial tension in
the belt; also calculate the greatest power that can be transmitted by this belt and its
corresponding speed.
An open belt drive connects two pulleys 1.2 m and 0.5 m diameter, on parallel shafts
3.6 m apart. The mass of the belt is 1 kg/m length and the maximum tension is not to
exceed 2000 N. The coefficient of friction is 0.3. The 1.2 m pulley, which is the
driver, runs at 200 rpm. Due to slip on one of the pulleys, the velocity of the driven
shaft is only 450 rpm. Calculate (1) The torque on each of the two shafts, (2) The
power transmitted, and (3) Power lost in friction.
A pulley is driven by a flat belt, the angle of lap being 1200. The belt is 100 mm wide
by 6 mm thick and density 1000 kg/m3. If the coefficient of friction is 0.3 and the
maximum stress in the belt is not to exceed 2 MPa, find the greatest power which the
belt can transmit and the corresponding speed of the belt.
In an open belt drive, the linear velocity of the belt is 3 m/s. The angle of lap on the
smaller pulley is 166, the co-efficient of friction is 0.3 and power transmitted is 3
kW. Determine the effect of power transmission in the following cases: (i) Initial
tension in the belt is increased by 10%. (ii) Angle of lap is increased by 10% by the
use of an idler pulley, for the same speed and tension on tight side. (iii) is increased
by 10%.
Two shafts whose centres are 1 m apart are connected by a V-belt drive. The driving
pulley is supplied with 100 kW and has an effective diameter of 300 mm. It runs at
1000 r.p.m. while the driven pulley runs at 370 r.p.m. The angle of groove on the
pulleys is 400. The permissible tension in 400 mm2 cross-sectional area belt is 2.1
MPa. The density of the belt is 1100 kg/m3. The coefficient of friction between the
belt and pulley is 0.28. Estimate the number of belts required.

22kw at 2000rpm assuming uniform wear and take coefficient of friction as 0.15
Derive the equation for the ratio of Tn / To tension on tight side to tension on slack
side in case of band and block brake.
A band and block brake having 12 blocks each of which subtends and angle of 130at
the centre is applied to the drum of 1m affective diameter. The drum and flywheel
mounted on same shaft has a mass of 2000kg and a combined radius of gyration of
500mm. The two ends of the bend are attached to pins on opposite side of the brake
lever at distance of 30mm and 120mm from the fulcrum. If a force of 200N is applied
at a distance of 750mm from the fulcrum find (1) maximum braking torque (2) angular
retardation of the drum. (3) Time taken by the system of come to rest from the rated
speed of 360 rpm. =0.3
