NEUROSCIENCE AND

EDUCATION

WHAT IS NEUROSCIENCE?
Scientific study of nervous system
Interdisciplinary science. E.g: neuroeducation, neuroethics,
neurocognitive, neurolaw etc.
Investigate - how the brain learns and remembers, from the
molecular and cellular levels right through to brain systems.
Cognitive neuroscience - branch in neuroscience that uses
neuroscience techniques to study cognitive process of the brain
such as perception, learning, and memory (Brandoni & Anderson,
2009) .
new insights to the development of cognitive functions interest to
educators concerned with how students learn.

HOW VALUABLE IS COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE TO

EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGISTS?

Early diagnosis of special education needs

Monitor and compare the effects of educational input
Increase understanding of individual differences in learning

relationship between intelligence and sex, age-related differences in brain

size etc.

e.g.: male greater performance on spatial cognitive tasks compared with

females. Females more neuronal efficient during tasks of verbal reasoning.
Executive functions (EF) of the brain is the most researched and studied in
cognitive neuroscience.

CONCLUSION
Findings in neuroscience (i.e. EF) important for learning
science.
approaches to learning must take into account cognitive
factors like working memory capacities for learning will be
much more effective.
Reducing cognitive loads slowing down, minimizing jargon,
explicit structuring and chunking of material helps students
learn more deeply (Carl Weiman, 2007).
