Lieutenant Governors message

on World Environment Day
Toronto, June 5, 2016. Her Honour the Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario,
has released the following message on the occasion of this years World Environment Day.
The theme of World Environment Day 2016Go Wild For Lifeencourages us to consider the
damage done to biodiversity and endangered species by the illegal trade in wildlife products.
Many people, organizations and governments in Ontario, particularly through work promoted by
the United Nations, are making important contributions to this significant issue, and it is
encouraging to see so many Ontarians involved.
We are sustained by the diversity of species on this planet, yet this diversity remains under
threat. On this World Environment Day, let us celebrate the unique plants, insects, and animals
and their habitats in our communities and the world. Avoiding the needless and tragic extinction
of species is in our best interests, now and in the future
World Environment Day is marked annually on June 5.
