DearMarionTownCouncil,

I would like to inform you that groundwater contamination has been discovered inareas
around Marion, CT. The source of contamination was able to belocated, insideJakesFertilizer
Plant. The contamination, nitrites and phosphates in the soil, spread to the EagleRiverandthen
spreadfurtherdownstream.

After testing, we determined that sample site number 27, located inside Jakes Fertilizer
Plant, was the most contaminated,havingacontaminationlevelof200ppb.Thissitehadatleast
a 4 times higher contamination level than any other site we performed tests on. After further
testing, we found that sites south ofsite27surroundingtheEagleRiverwerealsocontaminated,
yet not as severely at 50 ppb. To be specific, sites 24, 25, 15, 20, 10, and 16 all had a
contamination level of 50 ppb. This evidence allowed us to determine the source of
contaminationandhowfaritspreadintothetown.

I strongly advocate that you phytoremediate all contaminated areas in the town. The
process of phytoremediation is very simple, as it uses the roots of various plants to cleanse any
areas of contaminants. There are tremendous benefits to this process. The first advantageisthat
phytoremediation is extremely safe and lowrisk. Its important that it is a natural processusing
plants in the area, not using machinery or other artificial ways to decontaminate a site. The
second benefit of phytoremediation is it causes minor, insignificant disruption to the
contaminated sites and the community around it. Additionally, plants indigenous to the area are
better accustomed to its climate. Lastly, phytoremediation demands less machinery, energy, and
money than alternative methods of decontamination. It essentially makes the whole site look
more appealing. Water that once was contaminated will be as fresh as your local supermarkets
producesection!

Sincerely,
