TheEarthBin

Almost of school lunches end up being wasted, thrown in landfills to decompose,

despite the fact that food can be used to compostandcompletethefoodcycle.Thefoodcycleis
the series of steps of growing, the decomposition of food, and everything in between. When
food is throw away,itcannotfinishthefoodcyclebyputtingitsnutrientsbackintothesoil. Our
solution to this problem is an Earth Bin! The Earth Bin is a way ofcompostingthefoodwasted
at schools and putting that composted soil into local gardens and farms. The bin willbelocated
next to the trash cans at schools, and students will beeducatedonwhatfoodscanandcannotgo
into the compost bin. After each lunch time the bins will be emptied out andcompostedtolater
be put into the local twelfth grade garden to help growproduce.Producecan laterbeusedagain
in school lunches to continue the cycle. Our biologicalinspirationismostlybasedoffofaforest
ecosystem, in which everything is used completely and nothing goes to waste.Whensomething
dies or food is not eaten it is used and/or consumed by other organisms, and everything has a
purpose. We tried to recreate this with the Earth Bin, the nature of the idea is that we can take
waste and repurpose, or upcycle, it so that it can go back into the environment to positively
affectthecommunity.
