Department of Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur General ‘An awareness of laboratory safety is an important mindset that protects people, expensive equipment, and. the laboratory resources, Atall times, itis required that individuals working in the Structural Engineering Laboratory (GEL) behave ina mature and professional manner and follow proper operating procedures. This responsibility must be assumed upon entering the laboratory. The guidelines are intended to minimize accidents to persons and damage to equipment. Laboratory Dress ‘You must come properly attired to work in the laboratory. In this regard, the following dress rules must be adhered to: 1. You shall wear protective (safety) shoes, boots or sensible close-toed shoes; open-toed shoes, sandals, slippers or bare feet are not acceptable. 2, You shall wear long pants; half-pants (shorts) and skirts are not acceptable. 3. You shall not wear the clothes that may get caught in laboratory equipment, 4. You shall wear safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, face masks, etc, as necessary. Working in Laboratory ‘The laboratory houses a wide variety of equipment for specimen fabrication and testing, This equipment includes hydraulic, servo-hydraulic machines operating at very high oil pressure; high-voltage equipments for welding, drilling, machining operations; and sensitive low-voltage electronic sensors and computer control and data acquisition systems. The complexity of many of these devices necessitates that special care and consideration be given when operating them. If there is any doubt or any question as to how to properly operate any piece of equipment, consult with the instructor/supervisor/ permanent laboratory staff, Following rules are necessary to minimize accidents and to ensure that expensive equipment is not clamaged by carelessness or neglect: 1. Donothandle any materials or operate any equipment unrelated to your laboratory exercises. 2. Never operate any unfamiliar equipment without the specific approval of the instructor or permanent laboratory staff. 3, Check all wiring and electrical connections and assure that cables are clean and properly attached. Cables should not lie in water or oil, or be cut. 4, Ensure that all operations of large equipment (e.g. testing/ machining equipments, power tools, etc, shall occur ONLY in the presence of permanent laboratory staff. Be aware of your surroundings. Keep fingers and limbs clear of heavy articles and machinery. ‘Wear gloves if there is any possibility of abrasions or cuts. When in doubt, gloves shall be worn. ‘Wear safety glasses when operating a machine tool or power equipment. ‘Wear safety hats when using ladders, climbing or, working under overhead equipment. When in doubt, safety hats shall be wor. 9, Ensure at least two people are present at all times, while working in the laboratory. 10. Place all testing equipment in their proper storage area and cabinet after use. 1. Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times. Security For proper security of the laboratory facilities, please adhere to the following: 1. Lock the doors prior to your departure, if you are the last person to leave the laboratory. 2. Report any suspicious individuals or unwanted visitors who do not belong in the laboratory to instructor/supervisor/ permanent laboratory staff/security guards.
