Culturally/Linguistically Responsive Teaching Framework: SelfAnalysis

Villegas & Lucas (2007) describe a framework for culturally responsive and
linguistically responsive teaching. In this article the authors outline
important qualities teachers need to develop in order to effectively serve
students from diverse backgrounds. These qualities include attitudes and
beliefs (i.e., orientations such as sociolinguistic and sociocultural
consciousness, value of diversity and desire to advocate for students and
families), as well as knowledge and skills (i.e., knowing the students you are
serving, applying key principles of second language learning in the
classroom, etc.).
For this task, you are asked to conduct a self-analysis and reflect on your
own orientations and knowledge/skills as a teacher. Can you identify your
own strengths and weaknesses in each of the areas outlined by the authors?
Be as specific as possible in terms of your own values, beliefs and biases.
Give concrete examples of actions and experiences that illustrate your selfassessments in each area. Describe steps you can take for professional
growth in each area. Your analysis should be 2-4 double spaced pages.
