SUPERHERO PUPPETS

Intervention #1, Educational and Therapeutic Intervention

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE


Therapeutic Focus: To foster self-expression and creativity by allowing children to
create an image of themselves in the form of a superhero puppet and having them
verbalize their ideal superhero traits.

OBJECTIVES
Modality: Arts and crafts
Age Group: Preschool, school-age
Difficulty level: Beginner
Required time: 30 minutes

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES NEEDED
Table (or bedside table)
Chairs

MATERIALS NEEDED

Paper bags
Pre-cut masks using printable mask template
Paint and brushes
Markers
Glue (or stapler)
Cardstock or construction paper
Scissors

PREPARATION OF THE MATERIALS PRIOR TO INTERVENTION


Gather materials
Pre-cut masks in a variety of colors

PROCEDURE/DIRECTIONS
1. Hand out a paper bag to each child and help them glue (or staple) their mask onto the
side of the paper bag with a flap.
2. Have each child decorate the paper bag using materials of their choice.
3. Help each child cut out a cape out of cardstock or construction paper.
4. Once the children are done with their Superhero, have them share about their puppet
and what traits they would want their superhero to have.

VARIATIONS/EXTENSIONS
Have extra pre-cut masks that way older children can make masks for themselves
Optional desired embellishments like glitter, sequins, pom-poms, feathers, etc.
Consider using washable tempera paint suitable for children

CAUTIONS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS


Make sure to have adequate supervision with the use of glue and scissors. Depending
on the age of the children, the adults may have to cut shapes out for them.
Be aware that small items (i.e. glitter, pom-poms) may be a choking hazard for small
children.
