Sarnple #5 was collected from suspect mold growth on the east rvall of the
basement level. #3 Door storage room.
Sarnple #10 ',vas collected from dust and debds on an air filter, located in the frrst

floor, BBPH Training room.

Sample # l6 was coliected from dust and debris on an air filter, Iocated in the t-irst
floor, BBPH Diane's off-rce.
Sample #17 was collected from dust and debris on an air filter, located in the first
floor, BBPH Women's Way.

The air samples were collected utilizing a Buck BioAire bioaerosol sarnpling pump w'ith
Allergenco D Cassettes (spore traps). The Buck-sampling pump is calibrated up to l5
iiters per minute using a pump specific rotameter. Allergenco D cassettes are designed
for rapid collection and analysis of a wide range of airbome particulates, including fungal
spores. Ihe surface swab sarnples were collected utilizing a Copan Venturi Transystem

Transport Swab.
The air and swab samples were submitted to Hayes Microbial Consuiting in Midlothian.
VA (Hayes), where they were analyzed for moldlfungi using a light microscope fitted
with a 100X oil immersion objective for a total magnification of 1000X.

RESULTS
Because mold/fungi is tbund everywhere throughout nature, air samples collected lrom
suspect areas need to be evaluated against samples collected from non-suspeot areas or
outdoors (control sample).
As a general rule of thumb the tirngi found from the indoor sample should match the
control sample and be present at levels equal to or less than those of thE control sample.
Higher levels of fungi indoors or ditBrent fungi genera from the control sample can
indicate a possible indoor source.
The presence of ceftain fungi in indoor envirorunents is signiticant because tungi can and
produce mycotoxins. metabolites that can cause adverse health etfects in humans and
animals. Sylnptorns due to exposure of mycotoxins include dermatitis, cold and t'lu
symptorns. sore throat, headache, fatigue, diarrhea, and impaired or altered immune
function, u,hich may lead to oppo$unistic infbction.

will

Results from all thirteen (13) indoor air samples indicated the total mold spore
concentrations were lower than the outside control sample, with common fungal species

identified.

Results fiom all fbur suriace swab samples indicated No Fun-ei Detected.

Mold Analysis Repor"t dated June 6, 2016 for complete

anaiytical results of the samples collected for this project.

Please refer to the attached Hayes

The Limit of Detection is the lowest number of spores that can be detected based on the total volume of the sample collected and the percentage of the
slide that is counted. At Hayes Microbial, 100% of the slide is read so the LQD is based solely on the total volume. Raw spore counts that, exceed 500
spores will be estimated.

Fragments

Fragments are small pieces of fungal mycelium or spores. They are nol identifiable as to type and when present in very large numbers, may indicate
the presence of mold anrplification.

lndoor/Outdoor
Comparisons

There are no national standards for the numbers of fungal spores that may be present in the indoor environment. As a general rule and guideline that is
widely accepted in the indoor air quality field. the numbers and types of spores that are present in the indoor environment should not exceed those that
are present outdoors at any given time. There will always be some mold spores present in "normal" indoor environments. The purpose of sampling and
counting spores is to help determine whether an abnormal condition exists within the indoor environment and il it does, to help pinpoint the area of
contamination. Spore counis should not be used as the sole determining factor of mold contamination. There are many factors that can cause
anomalies in the comparison of indoor and outdoor samples due to the dynamic nature of both of those environments.

T Sgrlilioa,rtly-Higher than Oirtside Air-] The spore count is significantly higher than the outdoor count and probably indicates a source of contamination.
Ratio

Color Note

The types of spores found indoors should be similar to the ones that were identified in the outdoor sample. Significanl increases (more than
25o/ol in the ratio of a particular spore type may indicate the presence of abnormal levels of mold, even if the total number of spores of that
type is lower rn the indoor environment than il was outdoors.
Fungi that are presert in indoor samples al levels lower than 200 per cubic meter are not color coded on the report, unless they are one of the water
damage indicators.

Alternaria
Habitat: Commonly found outdoors in soil and decaying plants. lndoors, it is commonly found on window sills and other horizontal surfaces.
Health Effects: A common allergen and has been associated with hypersensitivity pneurnonitis. Alternaria is capable of producing toxic metabolites which
may be associated with diseaso in humans or animals. Occasionally an agenl of onychomycosis, ulcerated cutaneous infection and chronic
sinusitis, principally in the immunocompromised patient.

Ascospores
Habital: A large group consisting of more than 3000 species of fungi- Common plant pathogens and outdoor numbers become very high following
rain. Most of the genera are indistinguishable by spore trap analysis and are combined on the report.
Health Effects: Health affects are poorly studied, but rnany are likely to be allergenic.

AspergilluslPenicillium
Habitatl The mosl common fungi isolated from the environment. Very cornmon in soil an<l on decaying plant material. Are atrle to grow well indoors
on a wide variety ol subslrates"
Health Effects: This group contains common allergens and many can cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis. They may cause extrinsic asthma, and many are
opportunistic pathogens. Many species produco mycotoxins which may be associated with disease in humans and other animals. Toxin
production is dependent on the species, the food source, competition with other organisms, and other environmental conditions.

Basidiospores
Habitat: A common group of Fungi that includes the mushrooms and bracket fungi. They are saprophytes and plant pathogens. ln wet conditions they
can cause structural damage to buildings.
Health Effects: Common allergens and are also associated with hypersensiLivity pneumonitis.

Cladosporium
Habitat: One of the most common genera worldwide. Found in soil and plant debris and on the leaf surfaces of living plants. Ihe outdoor numbers
are lower in the winter and often relatively high in the summer, especially in high humidity. The outdoor numbers often spike in lhe late
afternoon and evening. lndoors, it can be found growing on texliles, wood, sheetrock, moist window sills and in HVAC supply ducts.
Health Effects: A common allergen, producing more than 10 allergenic antigens and a common cause of hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Myxomycetes
Habitat: Found on decaying plant material and as a plant pathogen.
Health Effects: Some allergenic properties reported, but generally pose no health concerns to humans.
